I know that many of our forum members are playing with the idea of producing their own products and selling them online.

But this is not an easy task, to say the least. Developing a product and finding the right suppliers is definitely a daunting task.

That’s why I picked this particular presentation to write a summary for.

Kian shares a lot of great tips on product development and sourcing them from China.

First of all, who is Kian Golzari?

Kian is based in China, he’s a product developer who already sourced and manufactured over 2500 products and personally visited 500+ Chinese factories.

He’s not just into cheap goods, he manufactured products for the NBA, UN, Olympic Games etc… and he also runs his own youtube channel Sourcing With Kian, where he goes into great detail about product development and sourcing.

Check Kian’s YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SourcingwithKian

Kian presented 10 important steps in his presentation, so let’s go over them one by one.

Self Actualizing.

Create the product YOU want to use yourself.

Fix something that is broken or create something to solve a problem.

Start with passion. Test products yourself and find their problems.

What is your unique sales proposition over the leader?

Find the best and beat them. Read their reviews and improve what customers are complaining about.

Purchase samples and test to find the weak points.

Talk with manufacturers to see what they suggest as they need the product.

Say how your product is different and make that your unique sales proposition.

Study the competition!

Buy the products of your competitors.

Test them and keep whatever specs/features that you like, change/replace what you don’t.

Read reviews positive and negative and implement.

Visit the actual retail stores where the competitors products are sold and ask the shopping assistants about their experience with those products, they know what customers think, use that to your advantage.

Create a vision board.

This is a great way of getting ideas for the future.

Write down the trends for now and the future… what colors are “in”, what packaging is popular (no plastic for example), recycled materials, design innovations, who are the top influencers in the category.

Use this vision board to plan a strategy to follow.

Search volume & keyword research.

This is one way of finding your category. Check demand, search volume on related sales channels...

The actual keywords people use can spark ideas for additional features.

Use this research to understand trends and what people are searching for.

Spec Sheet / Tech Pack / Quote Sheet.

Make sure the supplier understands what you are looking for, they will only produce what you ask them to produce.

Be as detailed as possible to get quotes for the SAME materials from all possible suppliers.

Ask for spec sheets of existing products that suppliers produce, use those to create your own.

Test, Test, TEST!

Make sure your products work the way they should.

By testing yourself, you will find the weaknesses and strengths and can improve what needs to be improved.

Ask for compliance certificates. Ask for influencer feedback from the beginning stages and make them part of the development process.

Don’t overdevelop!

Don’t try to develop the PERFECT product straight away, develop until 80% ready.

Launch, then collect feedback and improve. By delaying the launch, you might miss your season.

Align with a supplier that fits your purpose.

There are so many suppliers to choose from, don’t choose to work with just anyone.

Choose the ones that are the best match for whatever you try to achieve.

Make one item yourself.

If possible, try to make at least one item of your product yourself.

By understanding the process of producing your products, you can identify possible saving points when it comes to production time or choice of materials.

The presentation ends here. You know what part I found the best?

Studying the competition and trying to make a better product!

Truth to be told, it’s VERY hard to come up with a product that would be totally unique and groundbreaking!

Usually, whatever product idea you have, there is already someone producing just that.

BUT, any product can be improved and that's where the opportunity is.

That’s it for today!

I really enjoyed this presentation!

Creating your own product doesn't need to be difficult or expensive.

A quick and dirty way I learned through this and other presentations from Ecom World:

-Find a product that already has a big market,

-Read a lot of user reviews to figure out what consumers like and don't like, to come up with a new-and-improved product concept or design

-Find one or more manufacturers that can product a sample

-Sell your first batch of products on a crowdfunding platform

Presentations on Ecom World are worth their weight in titanium - can't wait until the next one in May!

Note: Have you requested for your free tickets to Ecom World yet? Details can be found HERE.

Right and spot on! it's so hard to produce something that noone has ever produced before... but making something better, that's WAY more achievable.

And in reality, that's exactly what many companies are doing, basically just using the inventions of others, to make their own products
