Will FTC now go after religions....?

Interesting story on the BBC website

Bath Christian group's 'God can heal' adverts banned

A Christian group has been banned from claiming that God can heal illnesses on its website and in leaflets.

The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) is the UK's FTC, which checks that any claims stand up to testing and proof.

Well, it seems that a Christian group's claims that "God can heal today" has fallen foul of the ASA and they have banned the adverts. Also interesting that the group have shut down their website, instead of coming forward with any proof of people that have been healed by God...

Just thought this raised an interesting point, as all religions are based on faith and absolutely no proof or evidence of their claims.

Will the FTC be shutting down evangelists and clerics after they've finished on the affiliate warpath...

that's ridiculous..how can they even proof that they are wrong...besides that it will be really interesting to see what ASA will do with all the flogs that are running in the UK right now..i thinks it's just a matter of time until they'll go after UK flogs like the FTC..Funny that so many affiliates think that advertising flogs in the UK is safer than in the US.

Surely the onus is on the religious group to provide the proof, not for the ASA to prove they are wrong.

If I advertise a bottle of pills and claim "This will heal everything", then I will, quite rightly, be taken to task by the ASA/FTC.

However, if I stand in the street and claim that "My God will heal everything", then that is ok?

It just made me think that there are a lot of claims in all religions that cannot be substantiated, and yet they fly under the radar of advertising authorities (well, except in this case). And you can't even say that money doesn't change hands, because "donations" are big business in a lot of churches.

Currently, the FTC has very limited jurisdiction over charitable and non-profit organizations. I think they can only get involved if the charity is soliciting contributions over the phone and are calling #'s on the DNC list. Also, I'm pretty sure the constitution would prevent the us gov from regulating what religious groups can or cannot say.

Religious nut jobs are the worst kind of nut jobs. Those giant evangelical churches in the states are the worst, they bilk old people out of their retirement time and time again and the FTC never lifts a finger to stop them. Its pretty heart breaking to read stories of people passing away and leaving all their assets in their estate to bullshit churches like those instead of their families. Surprising how much they've been able to get away with for so long.

The gov will go after churches because they are competition for revenue.
