How many of you feel good about promoting products for the others?
I am inspired by the Japanese working culture. A gray-haired old man spends his whole life working in a single industry, and so do the loyal employees there.

After running products for other people for a while, I asked myself, "How long am I going to run the product for them?" - "When will I be able to create my own product and spend my life developing it?"
I can't find the answer to this. How about your opinion?

I guess pretty much everyone, except just a few cases maybe, started their business journey by working for someone else, and it's pretty normal for the beginning as it allows you to get new experiences and learn much faster by selling and offering different types of products for others. Some people start their individual journey after this and get their business rolling, while others never overcome this step and always stay in the area of working for others, maybe because they don't have enough courage to start something on their own, or this way of making money seems more relaxing and interesting to them, who knows. I would always recommend at least trying to pull some personal project after some time, even if it turns out as mistake, it can be still a very valuable experience for the future.

I definitely have a lot of respect for people that have dedicated their entire lives to a single cause.
However, every person's different. Every person has a different life purpose and therefore different life lessons to learn.
The only way to be happy is to listen to our intuitive guidance and follow that.
Other people's experiences can be motivating or inspiring, but we may not be happy walking their path.
So - if you're inspired to create your own product, don't wait!
Come up with your product concept, contact manufacturers to see who can make it - of course if your product is truly innovative be sure to get a patent or take other measures to keep manufacturers from ripping your idea.
If you have starting funds, great! If not, go to a crowdfunding site like kickstarter or indiegogo to raise the funds for the first batch of product.
If you're having trouble coming up with a concept: Look at other projects on kickstarter/indiegogo to get inspiration!
Or: Look around your home to see which products you're already using, that you wished could be improved in some way. And figure out how to improve them.
Lastly: Product reviews are a GREAT source of inspiration. Go to amazon to check out some of the most popular products in various categories, check out customer reviews to see what people like and don't like, and try to implement some of those improvements on an existing product.
It's usually easier to come up with a better product, than to create a completely new and innovative product. The former is usually easier to promote as well.
Best of luck!

For me affiliate marketing just a way to earn my living and I see many advantages in it compared to other jobs.
I don´t say I´ll do it forever but I also don´t say I will definitely look for something else to do.
I´m promoting affiliate products for about 17 years now and I still enjoy what I´m doing so that I could do it for many more years but I am not emotionally attached to it at all.
When I find something I like better I have no problem to stop pushing other peoples products from one second to the next.

@
duckling This is exactly what I was implying: Basically do something for as long as you're inspired to keep doing it, and stop when it no longer makes sense to continue, or when you no longer enjoy doing it.
This is why many people would sell a growing business - they no longer enjoy working on it. And many entrepreneurs would also hire someone else to take over parts of their work they don't like (or no longer likes).
I also forgot to mention: It's not necessary to decide whether or not to devote your life to this new product! No reason to limit yourself in this way. Heck, these days, even marriages aren't forever. Let alone a product or business.

When you look at the whole thing from a bigger perspective... you are always running a product for someone else
An affiliate marketer runs campaigns for the products of others, a project manager runs a project for the owner, but even if you get to a stage where you own your own product, you are still running it for your customers, so to speak
To me it's more about finding myself in a position that I'm happy with. Similar to what twinaxe said above, AM is "just" a way of making $$$ for me... and a great one, much better than most IMO. This being said, I'm pretty happy about what Im doing right now. The way I make my living allows me to spend enough time on the things I really love and I have the money to actually be able to afford them.
But that's just me. Some people find their passion in building large business operations and they basically live what they do... something I wouldn't be able to pull off.
"When will I be able to create my own product and spend my life developing it?"
Not many products can last a life time, especially in the online space. You might have to change focus a few times

I had to completely re-focus 3 times already, since 1999 when I started online.
In the end it's all about what you are after and what you are willing to sacrifice in order to reach it.. if you really want it, you can start building your product today

Everyone works for someone. Even a CEO works for a board of directors. A board of directors works (in principle) for shareholders, etc.
As long as I have no problem with the product or service I am promoting, I am happy to promote them if it helps the offer owner and helps me!

Thank you for your comments, very helpful and insightful.
After carefully reading the comments, I thought of a broader problem. Besides money, what else do we need during our career?
- Reputation
- Relationships ( partner, businessmen, politicians, mafia)
- Power
- Passive income
- Anything else?

Depends on what you are doing, for a large part.
Is your business related to education, for example? You need VERY strong reputation to make it big. Same would go for consulting, making surgeries... basically any service
Are you selling goods? You should focus more on the quality of what you are selling and how you treat your customers...
Mindset is very important, in any business.
Relationships can help a TON, especially in the traditional business but it's very important in the online world too.
Power becomes more important when you enter certain business areas... working in the financial sector, government deals etc...
Passive income is nice to have for sure

But that's quite different from the other examples you mentioned.
Educating yourself is very important too, things change so you gotta keep up with that.
It's very hard to answer your question in a complex way, there are so many skills and characteristics that come into play, some are more important in certain businesses, some are mandatory in different ones... really depends on what you are doing and what your goals are

The "mafia" got me chuckling.
Everyone wants different things. But personally, I would put "happiness" at the top of that list.
I believe that ultimately, we're all searching for a sense of satisfaction/happiness. Other goals (including success) are simply the means to this end (i.e. happiness).
Money / passive income - we DO need a certain amount of that in order to live the lifestyle we want - but most people only need so much in order to be happy.
For most kinds of businesses, having the right relationships/connections can really help your business to grow.
Having a good reputation is also important to any business, no doubt about that.
But all those things are just "practical" considerations - things you NEED in order to have a thriving business.
To me: Whether just having a thriving business would be enough to make you happy, would be the more important question to ask.
One trap I see a lot of people fall into, is that they chase "success" for all the wrong reasons. They want money so they can command respect from other people, buy stuff they can flaunt on social media (mansions, luxury cars...), and achieve a certain status and power.
There's nothing fundamentally "wrong" with those reasons themselves,
except when the person is trying to fill some void they may not even KNOW they have.
A low self-esteem for example.
In that case, sooner or later the person would become aware that material stuff would never truly fill that void. It may take years for some people to come to this realization.
I would suggest to choose a business that actually aligns with your happiness, before even starting.
Something that will make you happy and give you satisfaction WHILE you're building it. Not something you'll need to suffer through in order to achieve some secondary goals (i.e. the means to the ultimately goal of happiness).
But then again - that's just me. Everybody has different beliefs.
