Has anyone done local PPC?

I have a few questions about it.

Is google easier on sites that are actual businesses?

What are some ways of doing keyword research?

Do you mean easier as in a physical location? In many ways yes. You have the advantage of using extensions like pay per call, places, etc. It's really going to depend on the keyword/niche.

Grab the keyword tool and start coming up with some ideas. Of course you can use your "niche in "state" "niche in city" "niche's subdivision name" etc.

Don't forget that when you're targeting local you should be limiting the area your ads display in with the Geo-settings. This allows you to go after and include broader keywords since you're still limiting the eyeballs on your ads with geo targeting.

Yes the buisness is a physical location, I was just wondering if they have the same risks as affiliate campaigns of being slapped easily?

Depends on what you call "slapped" or what meaning you put into "slapping". If your CTR is bad then - yes - you wil "slapped".

My personal experience in local lead gen is horrible. But, I guess, it really depends on the product/service you are selling. You still pay whatever CPC Google asks you to pay but traffic may or may not back out well for you. If you are all hyped up about making monies selling leads to chiropractors/dentists/fitness instructors I'd suggest you look somewhere else. It may or may not work.

I did alright with my gf's dads business, it all depends on how many people are competing, the price got jacked up to $6 per click when some guy came in running lead generation on the keyword if that happens you need big conversions or a high ticket price (luckily I had each) you should be okay, but my gf's dad doesn't understand ROI needs investment before the returns happen and didn't want to run it any more.

Then I focussed on SEO and got it to page 1 anyway

He is in the home improvement industry.

hi. they don't get slapped easily.
and even if they did, 99.9% the campaign will be up and running
once you call in to their support line to expedite the review process.

plus, you can add those site extension stuff like phone number, local address to make your search text ad stand out more.
