First steps in POP (20)

Hi,

After reading all the info on this forum for a few weeks decided to just jump into the deep.

The goal is simple: get more freedom in my professional life. Currently I'm doing fine as a online marketeer working for agencies and end clients, but I need some extra excitement (easily bored).
The plan is to work daily on my affiliate skills and campaigns. Because I have that online marketing business, it's not always easy to find the time to work on my AM.
But when I know I have to do something everyday (even something small) I hope to keep on getting better without wasting weeks because I'm 'too busy'. A big believer of the +1% a day ...

Milestones for me would be:

- first conversion
- 1 day green
- € 33 a day (1K a month)
- € 100 a day
- € 330 a day (10K a month, could focus 100% on AM)
- buy myself a BMW E30 M3 rally car and go racing (I'm not really into fancy cars and lifestyle, but rally racing is a passion )

If I 'only' get to € 33 a day it would allready be something worthwhile (keeping in mind that all the stuff I'm learning here will be usefull for my online marketing clients in some way).

So, what did I do allready:
- started the 40 days tutorial of @vortex , stopped because too busy
- started the 40 days course again with the 'daily plan). Was kind of usefull to read some parts for a second time, definitely not a wast of time.
- started a few campaigns on Propeller traffic (pop) and Haka offers (direct linking)

The first campaigns
- managed to get the tracking working (still feel a bit like a monkey that just does what he's told to do, want to understand this better in the near future).
- took some countries that where suggested and took a few myself.
- lost 100% on the countries I selected myself (lesson learned)
- did some Push on the same country and got some conversions, but less interesting
- also tested a European country, how hard could it be ... lost 100% (lesson learned)
...
- but I also managed to get my first conversions , felt really nice. (first milestone!)
- the next days I got some more conversions and it was really easy to tweak the campaign (platform, OS, OS version, browser, day parting, .... my Google Ads experience came in handy).
- And for today I'm in the green. (second milestone?)



But probably by the end of the day it will be red again. Not really a problem, scaling is more of a concern. I have tweaked this till green, but now it is just too small.
Better get a larger country? I know @vortex suggested something with a 1.000.000 users but there is not much choice then. Jamaica was suggested by HAKA.

Is it possible to get success in countries where English is not a used that much? All the offers of HAKA are English

Allready tested WIFI, Brocker ads. Wifi gave me some conversions, Brocker was zero. So for a small budget managed to really get some first learnings.

So I'm really satisfied with this first week of really getting this thing started, but also bit confused about what I could do next?
Of course I will go further with the @vortex tutorial, getting started with the landingpage part.

Hoping to get some extra suggestions for a next step? @vortex? @twinaxe other experienced POP people here?

I'm guessing, start with a bigger country? Upload test budget and optimize the crap out of the campaign as soon as I get enough data?

+ note to myself: start a journal, forgotten 50% of the tweaks i did to this campaign

As I have planned to work daily on my AM, I will also try to give an update weekly in this FA (another way to push myself a bit )

Hi there and congratz on your conversion. I know how it feels...i'm in the same position.

I learnt from Amy and Twinaxe to be happy when you have more than 5 conversions and test the right budget.
Read 3 times the 40 days tutorial and the Twinaxe push tutorial. Even if it's push, there is a lot of gold.

To be honest but I never use OS version or browser targeting or day parting in my click2sms campaigns.

As OS I just target Android, that's all.

They are not all in English, most offers auto translate in several different languages

My best click2sms campaigns are also with all mobile traffic (Wifi and 3G) but I never exclude broker traffic.

Check my threads, I shared a muIti language LP for such offers.

I also had very good campaigns in smaller geos but when the geo is too small you sometimes have to run several campaigns.

What exactIy do you mean with optimizing the crap out of the campaigns?

I just ask because above you already wrote about OS versions, browsers etc and you can also optimize campaigns to death.

When you have to optimize such campaigns at such granular level it's mostly not worth it.

99% of my campaigns I only optimize by placements.

@martinbe Please post the things related to your campaigns in your own FA so that we can keep a cleaner structure

I probably was so eager to get in the green that I have optimized it too hard using al possible adjustement.
And made the campaign too small this way.

Very interesting to read there are different languages available for the HAKA offers, makes them much more interesting.

Next step tomorrow:
- get some information about those languages with the Haka people.
- launch 3 new geo's with the same offer but less optimizing and see what happens.


Still green for today, so milestone 2 > done!



@twinaxe : small question. I have a win rate of 26 % . Would it be interesting to bid more so I can get more traffic?
ROI would probably go down a bit, but at the end 10% ROI of 100 is better than 15% of 50 right?

Exactly that´s it.

When you have to optimize a campaign that hard that you´re left with next to no traffic better move on.

You have a great way to think about it and you are absolutely correct that a lower ROI on high volume can often bring more profits than a high ROI on low volume.

To increase the bid rate you have 2 options.

One is to increase the bid, the other option is to increase the creative CTR.

This has to do with how trafficsources calculate.

They give most traffic to the campaigns that bring them most money.

Now let´s say you have affiliate A with this campaign: 0.01% creative CTR, $2.00 CPC
And you have affiliate B with a campaign with exactly the same targeting but this numbers: 1% creative CTR, $0.05 CPC

Affiliate A would receive 1 click at $2 CPC per 10k impressions = $0.20 eCPM.
Affiliate B would receive 10 clicks at $0.05 CPC per 1k impressions = $0.50 eCPM.

Affiliate B would receive more volume although the bid is much lower but because of the high creative CTR the trafficsource will make more money with the campaign from affiliate B = more traffic for that campaign.

The campaign yesterday ended RED (-50%). Even after all the tweaking, so it was a nice first time with conversions but nothing more than that.
Goodbye Jamaica!

But after the initial success and additional information/insights I'm really triggered to get this working.
So going to pick 3 new geo's and restart from there!

Don´t write Jamaica off forever, it´s an up and down with click2sms/click2call.

You can have good campaigns there so test it again when it pops up some day.

So much for my weekly update ... other stuff, family, a cold, ... excuses excuses...

But I did manage to build my first landers and get them running!
Made 1 conversions so I'm guessing the tracking works.
Not sure if all the tracking works, so next time I will have to get some better results to so I can check the tracking better.

This morning I added my first Backbutton link.

And now I'm looking at a Push Collection Script.

Two of the options are Propush.me from (PropellerAds) or Monetizer.

Here I could use some advice..
What Would you choose as a beginner?
At the moment I am not into bulding my own push list just want to monetize my traffic.
So I'm guessing Propush.me?

Maybe a third option?

To verify that tracking is working:

1)Make sure impressions are registering in the tracker (and if you're using landers, make sure clicks are also showing up).

2)Make sure traffic is getting to the offer(s) - by checking the dashboard of the affiliate network(s).

3)When you've made at least one conversion according to the affiliate network dashboard(s), check the tracker to make sure the conversion was posted successfully.

The above checks don't verify whether your funnel is correct though, but your setup above is pretty straight-forward - no worries there.


You can split-test like @twinaxe suggested.

Also: There are 2 things to test here - backbutton, and adding a push collection script to your landing page(s). Both should be done to maximize profits.

Allright Allright.... when I started this I knew that I was going to run into a dead end.
Well, looking at on now...

to keep it short:

- finished the 40 days tutorial of @vortex
- managed to get about 30 conversions with direct linking (made about $ 10.5 on € 100 media budget)
- managed to get only 2 conversions with landers

- this week tested some more in 8 different geo's and 0 conversions

The set up should work because I got 2 conversions
I earned about $ 1 with propush.me (pocket money after spending € 30 on traffic).
+ I'm seeing the traffic in my affiliate network.





If only I got some conversions, it would be easier to do the next step.

At this moment I am using PropellerAds en HAKA.



What would you try next?

- try different geo's? How many would you try? Any suggestions?
- try different offers? Had some success with this sweepstake / iphone 13
- try different geo and offers?

Or something completely different?

btw, these are my landers at the moment. Should be allright I guess.










I really don't mind building different campaigns.

Once you have 1 campaign, it is just a matter of copy/paste and some adjustements (at this stage).

Next round is tomorrow, so all tips are welcome :-)


PS: still love this AF game, just need to find the next level so I can try this optimizing / scaling stuff (some of the finals lessons I want to practice).

Another thing to look at... my campaign yesterday made me 0 conversions and 500 subscribers on propush... so, maybe I should test it again without the propush script

Do test more landing pages than just the ones you've shown. Do more spying.

And have you tested your landing page speeds to make sure they load super fast? Stuff like that can make/break a campaign.

If you're suspecting at all that the propush script may be affecting conversions - leave it out for now. When you find an offer that converts consistently, you can always split-test then to see the impact of adding the script.

I don't know how well the Haka offers are working, as I haven't run them in a while. @twinaxe?

Other than that: Now that you know your tracking is working, and you know how much to spend on an offer before you need to cut it (I'm assuming you do), you may be ready to mass-test offers.

So yes - different geos, different offers, even different verticals.

On pop these days it can take testing a TON of offers to find good ones. So test lots, cut losers fast, scale winners quickly - that's basically the game.

This is just for new accounts as far as I know. Try to talk to your AM to see if they can increase the limit or remove it completely.

The limit is based on the priority level.

Green Level = 20 new campaigns per day
Silver Level = 40 new campaigns per day
Gold Level = 40 new campaigns per day but can get increased
Platinum Level = unlimited new campaigns per day

It's been a while since I posted a next step in this thread.
Well, unfortunately there is not much to tell.
I'm kinda stuck.

I'll give short roundup.
Been doing POP traffic since end of September.
Followed the 40 days course of @vortex and I think I get it.

I spent about € 300 on Propeller Ads and got about 59 conversions on Haka (so 20.65).
Mostly with direct campaigns. Did some prelanders, but that did not convert that well

The main problem is that I did this in many many campaigns (probably about a 100), I tested a lot (offers, geo, bid,..).
But at the end of it I still have no clue, or progress is very limited.
Still kinda feels like a lotery...

I know € 300 is not that much, but at the moment it feels like I could drop another €300 and still have no clue.
And the account ons FunnelFlux, LanderLab, STM... are also a cost of course.
On the other hand I know some people do get this working so I know there is a way.

At the moment I'm also thinking about testing some other traffic sources.
Google Display (bannering) perhaps, too bad the info on this forum is kinda old.

I had the idea of testing affiliate for 6 months, I'm at 3 months now... feels like a critical moment

I know I have to figure this out myself, not hoping for the magic answer because there is none.
Just felt like posting a bit of frustration

I can imagine that it sucks.

The problem is that you can only make real progress when you have conversions so in the beginning it´s not even about making progress, it´s all about testing as much as possible to find a converting campaign.

When I check your thread I see that you posted almost no stats or so, maybe you should start doing it so that we can check it together.

Then we can tell you a bit more about your campaigns.

Like @twinaxe suggested, please post more stats and other details.

Also: Are the haka offers all you've tested? How many other offers have you tested? And how much did you spend on each? For unproven offers, most of them you can cut by/before 10x payout in spend if you're directly linking.

Having said that: There ARE other traffic types/sources out there. Pop has allowed you to learn the basics - tracking, hosting, landers, offers, testing and optimization - for a relatively low price. If you want to switch, by all means try something else.
