This depends on what you expect from a conference. To me, there are 2 main factors that make me decide what Im about to attend :

1. Speeches: all conferences have speeches but the quality can VARY a lot. On smaller/niched conferences the quality of speeches tends to be quite low. For example... I've attended (and will likely again in the future) an adult conference a few times (TES) and while it's great for networking with people from the industry, the quality level of the speeches is usually very low. Most of these are just sponsors of the event presenting their stuff. I've even experienced that the speaker didn't show up at their scheduled speech It's the same with local conferences, for example there are some conferences/events in Russia or Ukraine... again great for networking with the locals and partying but not so much for the speeches.

2. Networking: this part depends on who you want to meet with. If it's company reps, which is crucial to growing your business due to the improved level of communication once you meat face to face with someone, you need to select a conference with plenty of companies exhibiting. If you are after a specific segment of affiliates or companies that you want to meet with... it might be better to choose a smaller niched or local conference, such as the ones I mentioned above. To be more precise, there are always adult companies at any conference but not as many as on TES. Likewise, if you want to tap into the Russian speaking market, it would be a good idea to travel to Moscow.

The best conference I've ever been to was the Affiliate World (Europe or Asia)... some might say I'm a bit biased because these conferences were actually born on STM and it's organized by the same people who started this forum, but it's really not the case, I'm 100% honest here. AW always has great speeches presented by solid speakers, the market place is huge so you can collect tons of contacts and there is a ton of affiliates attending these shows which make them great for networking.

BUT... it all comes down to what you personally do at the conference. You need to start talking to the people, you need to make the contacts, you need to take the time and watch the speeches that relate to you... you need to get out of your comfort zone and do what is needed to move your business forward. The conference itself won't do this for you, it's all about what you make out of it.
