Amazon seller central acount question - getting started.

I want to join the free account first, do the listings and upgrade to the professional account after the listings are all ready and just before starting the PPC campaigns or driving traffic, will there be an issue? I've heard Amazon creates a "ding" with the slightest "mistake" and bans randomly like Facebook ( at least if you don't know what you're doing). Please advise.

I did just that and it was fine -- no reason for them to ban you for saving your own money and not needing to use one of their projects. FYI they even pause the pro account fee if you don't use the account too (of course only after a month or two...heheh)

Edit: Also, if they pause your pro account due to inactivity you'll have to go through their verification process again, which is exceedingly annoying to sort out. You need your usual personal ID yada yada but also a bank statement...which should have your address listed literally exactly 1 to 1 as it has been listed in your Amazon account, including whether any word is on the next row or not. Otherwise you get to see "rejected" over and over and over again.

Aha, awesome! Then I will save and not go with what I said in your thread. I got my passport renewed only for Amazon. And in the process of getting my driving licence renewed too - just in case they would need that too. I dont think they will... But I have a question now - will they need more steps if I need to sell in the U.S. I'm starting with the U.S. market but I am located in India. Those residing in the U.S. need to fill a tax document but I don't need to pay taxes there or in India. Precisely the reason why I am not selling in India at least this financial year. I will hire a good accountant next financial year before trying my own market or the European market. Pretty far fetched. And just like you need to sell my first unit But nowhere close to the "risk" you are taking! And now you have saved my $40 I always avoided FBA because of the risk. Last year I enrolled for the $5000 Amazing Selling Machine FBA course because they cover $5000 worth of unsold inventory. I found the course pretty basic and asked for a refund within the 30 day period. And decided to stay away from FBA then. Now taking the plunge with a new plan and improved mindset! Again at the minimum risk. Yet all excited about the upcoming christmas sales

No need to overthink this -- it's just an account registration process. Go in there and find out how many steps there are.

Given you're not even going to be taking on much if it all any risk you should just jump right into it and see if your product sells. Validate your idea ASAP. That's by far the hardest and most difficult part. Bureaucracies, sign-up processes, campaigns and whatnot are easy. They're just details. Do you have a 3PL in the US or is your supplier shipping your product for you?

My supplier will be shipping directly, but I may split between a 3PL and FBA for any FBM products that sell. I'm worried about the registration and staying safe on Amazon than about selling. I just need to list the product and send traffic there. I somehow feel it will all go good and then if it doesn't I have nothing to worry! Just list another product!!

What kind of traffic are you sending? You did mention all sorts of traffic. But have you tried Pinterest yet if your niche surrounds around Pinterest audience?

@shishev another registration question - for private labeling - can I just come up with anyone name that isn't trademarked ( atleast with my initial search) and then later change or stay with that during the brand registration when I am ready?
Which product research tools are you using? I am going with Helium 10 and will add Viral Launch for a second layer of validation once I make some sales.

You can come up with a name and you can even use the company name in your listing's title.

As for the actual "brand" field that you fill for your listing (and the small URL that shows under your title) you add 'Generic' or something of the sort, until you've registered with Amazon brands / trademarked etc.

I got a discount on Jungle Scout -- purely to look at their academy training which was actually really good for newbies and eye-opening. Recommended. Plus you get the tool for a while as an added bonus. I've since cancelled my JS sub and moved on to Helium10 as it's more advanced.

Plus they've even got stuff like this:

That tutorial combined with their academy or w/e it was called and you're set as a newbie knowing all the basics. No need to spend $XXXX on courses.

@shishev That's great. But I am already with Helium 10 and they offer a free course that they sell for $997. I perhaps I mentioned I blew money and finally postponed FBA. But suddenly things took a different turn I realized I don't need to invest anything upfront for FBA (or rather FBM ) to start with. I need to get a USA EIN number though which takes a few hours over phone. My supplier has a long blog post on how to avoid UPC. They seem to be the only two hiccups and once that's sorted I am good to go.
