Redirect traffic occurs when a user types an undeveloped domain name into their browser bar. Instead of displaying a website, the owner of that domain name is choosing to monetize their traffic by redirecting it to an advertiser.
A quick way to illustrate this is when you type books.com into your browser bar and within milliseconds you are redirected to barnesandnoble.com. This example is a little different because Barnes and Noble actually bought the domain books.com, but there are still tens of thousands of other generic keyword domain names people type into their browser expecting to find a website that sells what they are looking for.
Redirect traffic is often referred to as “direct navigation” or “zero click” among other terms because the user doesn’t have to click to end up on your landing page. Unlike paid or organic search traffic, you also aren’t being listed next to all your biggest competitors before your customer ends up on your page.
Most ad networks charge for redirect traffic on a PPV (pay-per-visit) basis and have different ways of determining the value of a visit such as GEO, OS, Category, etc. At Trellian, we have an auction based real-time bidding platform, which allows our users to enter a bid amount they are willing to pay for a certain keyword.
One big differentiator in redirect traffic is the quality and relevancy. If you can, try to find out where and how your traffic source obtains their redirect traffic. For example, at Trellian we also own a domain investor platform where domain investors looking to monetize their traffic will put their domain names and allow us to then sell their traffic to our performance marketers and affiliates on our platform using our bidding platform so there is no middleman.
