Strange issue with Propeller Ads custom bids (8)

Strange issue with Propeller Ads custom bids

The last 2 days I found out about a pretty strange issue when you run custom bids on @propellerads.

3 days ago I created several rules in Optimizer to automatically increase and decrease the bids for zones on push traffic when they meet specific conditions.

In the evening I added the rules to many campaigns that I run and then went bed.

The next morning I woke up and was shocked when I checked my stats, lots of red, some pretty strange numbers and already about $-80 or so and it got worse and worse.

When I checked the worst campaigns I saw that it was only very few placements that caused most of the high losses.

Their CPC is higher than campaign bid so I thought it probably has to do with the rules on Optimizer so I tried to find out what happened.

The rules I created are these:

Code:
Increase Bid if Tracker Conversions => 1 & Tracker ROI => 50%
Increase Bid if Tracker Conversions => 2 & Tracker ROI => 100%
Decrease Bid if Tracker Conversions => 2 & Tracker ROI <= -20%
Decrease Bid if Tracker Conversions => 3 & Tracker ROI <= -10%
Decrease Bid if Tracker Conversions => 5 & Tracker ROI <= 0%
With these stats the rules should never increase the bids so I checked these zones in Optimizer and saw that the rules to increase the bid for these zones got executed again and again.

When I checked why Optimizer executed the rules over and over again although these zones are on loss I saw things like this:

Based on these stats it would have been ok when the rules were executed so I went to Propeller and checked what is shown there.

There I saw that the affected placements cost way less than what the tracker shows, even less than what their bid is.

Here is what Binom shows for some of the placements

And here is what Propeller shows for the same zones in the same timeframe:

You see, it´s a huge difference.

$371.08 vs $3.138
$160.78 vs $2.655
$58.57 vs $3.657
$70.45 vs $5.952
$54.27 vs $6.502

That´s altogether $715.15 cost in Binom vs $21.904 cost in Propeller Ads.

In Propeller Ads these zones somehow have a much lower CPC than what their bid is so based on the real stats Optimizer was absolutely right to increase the bid again and again.

Propeller seems to send the custom bid through the {cost} token and usually this shouldn´t be a problem at all because usually for a zone it´s custom bid = real CPC.

For these few zones however it seems that something is wrong because their real CPC is lower than the custom bid, even lower than the default campagn bid so what happened is that Binom received the wrong (and way too high bids) costs through the {cost} token and that lead to such messed up stats.

Long story short, when you work with custom bids make sure to check your stats more carefully to avoid such stuff.

It also seems to be only a problem of very few zones.

I blocked these zones for now and did some brainstorming to come up with a workaround to still run automated rules for bid management but the last days were really quite annying to first find out what happened, then do damage control and then find a way to deal with it.

Nonetheless I am pretty happy that the high losses were just an error and the real stats are not that bad

Sent an email.

Shouldn´t be hard to solve, in the end it´s only needed to send the real CPC through the {cost} token and now the custom bid.

Yup, looks like a clear problem with the cost reporting on propellers side.

I can totally imagine how you got "surprised" by the numbers in a bad way, I hate to wake up to days like that and it happened to me a few times. When it's a reporting issue, thats the smallest problem

I am in contact about it with my AM but the rules are not working anyways because somehow the CPC column got removed from the stats.
