London Calling.........to the STM Forum
Hello,
Looking forward to working with you all over the coming months. I have been trying to get my Affiliate campaigns off the ground for the last couple of months with little or no success. I have been working in media planning and buying for the last fifteen years in the UK and am looking to build up a ‘passive’ income stream and eventually morph into a “digital native” so I no longer have to be office and desk bound.
I have signed up for and completed large parts of the John Crestani Affiliate Training Programme but have had little success either promoting his programme or running some ‘skin’ offers through Facebook. Suffice to say I have had one Facebook account closed down and have (slowly) had to start a new Business Manager account. I’m now waiting for my Credit Card to be approved (again). I have learnt more about ‘catfishing’ and Facebook's methodology to reduce ‘fake’ accounts than I wanted to.
All the blogs and forums said that you should focus on one channel to start with and one vertical and become an expert in both. I would like to start in Finance / Student Debt and focus on Facebook as the preferred channel. The targeting capabilities on Facebook are unbelievable.
So, I have a couple of questions to ask the STM forum and follow newbies.
- Are promoting programmes like the John Crestani one acceptable on Facebook? It seems to fall into a ‘grey’ area and is classified as MLM which is banned by Facebook.
- Which Affiliate Networks have the best finance offers on them? Any guidance would be really fantastic.
- Is Facebook the best channel to promote loans for Student Debt? It states in the Ads Policy “Ads must not promote misleading or deceptive services related to student loan consolidation, cancellation or refinancing.”
Finally, if there are any recommendations on other verticals that a Newbie should start on then please feel free to add them to this thread.
Looking forward to your response and getting some successful campaigns up and running.

Honestly I would look more localy and approach companies / agencies in your area/state/country who might be similar to the offers you see in networks. FB is so tense and problem with networks often are raped landers, domains, offers. Look I am not saying networks are shit since a bunch out there proper good stuff, but there is no other traffic source so tense on links than FB I think. Perhaps Google?
The bigger affiliates can demand unique domains but “newbies” probably have to deal with the “regular stuff” first. If you have quick bans and probably no profit from start you get demotivated very quickly.
Especially touchy verticals can be a headache.
Or avoid FB and use your knowledge for push, native or google for example.

Stickupkid, thanks for the feedback. You are right about not going near Facebook for the moment. I have decided not to run any more campaigns on FB as I don't want to keep getting banned. I have just started doing the 40 Day Tutorial so I will be focussing on getting some campaigns up and running that way.

Starting off on the journey
Day 2. 2nd March 2021
I am working my way through the 40 Day tutorial from Vortex for 2020 and have signed up to the Affiliate Networks and Traffic sources that are recommended in the tutorial.
I have also signed up to Voluum and am now invested a little bit more financially by buying the tracking system. I’ve only signed up for the monthly contract to give me the flexibility to close the account down if the Affiliates thing doesn’t work out for me.
I have asked the rep at Mobipium for some campaigns to start running and am also waiting to hear back from HAKA as to which geo’s they would recommend.
We are obsessed with the weather in the UK and I can tell you that the weather In London has improved. We now have sunshine but it’s still bitterly cold out of the sunshine and everything is starting to unthaw and spring is on the way….
I have also downloaded the 300 page report “What’s Working in Affiliate Marketing in 2021” to try and put me off setting up some campaigns.
I’ll update you tomorrow on how successful I have been in setting up a campaign.

Day 3: 3rd March
I had some fun today trying to get into Propeller Ads on Chome. I have Ad Blocker Plus on my browser and it seems to throw the whole site out of kilter – I turned it on and added the URL to the approved site list and still nothing. I opened up Internet Explorer (going old school) and everything seemed to work fine as I didn’t have the Ad Blocker on the browser.
Tonight I set up three campaigns from Haka on Voluum. The way Voluum is set up has changed since the document that Vortex and the team wrote which threw me into a panic for a while. I managed to get it all sorted. The three test campaigns I’ve set up are:
Match or Not
|
Global
|
Payout: $0.35
|
Gift 2 Iphone
|
Global
|
Payout: $0.35
|
Watch Free TV
|
Global
|
Payout: $0.35
|
Went back to add some monies to the Propeller Ads account and the Credit Card vendor couldn't send out a four digit authentification code (a glitch in their system) ... these small things are sent to test us along the journey

24 March - Too long ago to remember
A lot has happened in the last two and a half weeks since I last posted.
I have had a number of meetings with the guys at Voluum over email helping me get my first campaign set up with Haka and using Propeller Ads as the traffic source. I eventually got there and set the campaign live. A small step in the right direction.

Day 26: 26 March
Been sent the latest offers from Haka and the top geo’s for the weekend so I have set up a new campaign running two offers across four countries in Eastern Europe.
At least I know that they are not ‘adult’ offers.
Hope that it won’t get paused after fifteen minutes of being up!

Day 30 - 30th March
With a little bit of help from the team at Voluum and going over the Campaign Set Up and re-reading the notes in the Voluum documentation folder I found my glaring newbie error and have (re)set the campaign in Propeller Ads. I hid my face in my hands when I realised what a simple error I had made!!
If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.
Campaign has now been approved on Propeller Ads so I will read some of the Voluum documentation (very dry) and see how the campaign in performing. Might even be bold enough to pull up a report in the morning to see how the campaign has performed and what optimisations I can make.

Let me guess - you either:
1)Cloned an old campaign and forgot to replace the destination url, or
2)Set up a new campaign but copied the campaign url from the wrong campaign in Voluum
Didn't you?
I've made both mistakes more times than I care to admit. Just need to slow down a little bit and double-check everything.
Let's back up a bit...
When I looked at the Propeller Ads I seemed to be spending monies but not a great deal. I’ve done a few edits and increased the bid price.
When I checked on Haka I has some conversions but not enough to break even and am looking at a healthy loss.
What was your original bid? Were you targeting all 4 geos in the same campaign? Did you at least drill down by country > zones to see if any of the geos had promise?
I really wouldn't mind looking at some stats if you wouldn't mind posting! To make images appear nice and big in posts, please see this post for instructions:

Amy, you caught me red handed with that one.
I had to take the dog for a walk and work through the process I went through and when I realised what I had done it was such an easy fix. Even in all the Voluum documentation it is very difficult to see the seconnd tab to get the new campaign URL. I will be uploaded some results this afternoon.
The dog was happy with the extra walk!

It's not going to be easy to promote any get-rich-quick schemes on Facebook (including MLM and pyramid schemes).
