Exoclick bidding process understanding

Hi everyone,

I am buying adult traffic on exoclick (banners) in tier3 country of latam. I am trying to figure out how the whole bidding system works on exoclick, because it appears more sophisticated than it seems on the first look.

So, I work on cpm model, and every site zone has the minimum price per 1000 views set to 0.001$. At the same time, I am able to see the highest price for my targeting and surprisingly it also shows me that it is 0.001$. Logically I would suggest that there’s no competition? On estimated volumes exo promises to provide me with 4 millions views. But of course if I set my cpm to 0.001 I will barely get few thousand views and just dozens of clicks.

At the same time, if I set my cpm price to 0.1 for example, I will get a good volume and it seems like I am outbidding everyone around.

So, my question is if there’s some shady algorithm behind bidding and what could I do? Just raising the bid a bit to find the right price?

Exoclick's bid estimator has always been buggy, it shows nonsense at times

For the most accurate results, make sure you specify the targeting more... choose the device, connection type etc... that way, you will get a better idea about the actual bids.

Advertisers are using their targeting options and specify their bids respectively. So for example, those who target users with a specific device, OS, state or connection type, are also willing to pay more for such impressions/clicks. In any GEO, the are campaigns running with wildly different bids, based on the targeting settings.

So, my question is if there’s some shady algorithm behind bidding and what could I do? Just raising the bid a bit to find the right price?
This is pretty much what I'm doing. I start bidding lower, then increase to see how much more traffic I get by upping the bid a little. As soon as I notice that any additional increase won't give me significantly more traffic, I know I'm close to being the top bidder. Then, based on the campaign results, I decide whether I want to be close to the top or go lower.

Thank you!

In this case, should I try to avoid using smart cpm in exoclick and stick to a fixed cpm?

I always go with smartCPM, that way you are not overpaying for clicks. Honestly, I don't see any big positive in choosing fixed CPM over smart.

With smartCPM you pay just a little bit more than the closest competitor "below" you. With fixed, you pay what you set as your bid, even if your competitors bid way less.

Just a word of caution, do not set the smartCPM bids a lot higher than what you actually want to pay. Let me explain why.

Example: You set the bid to $1 smart CPM, but since there are no high bidders, you start receiving traffic at $0.20 CPM. That means that the closest competitor with a lower bid than yours, is at around $0.19. Now, when a new competitor joins the game and set their bid to $0.9, your CPM price will jump to $0.91 (+/-).

Thank you!

Do you know what's the additional percentage you are getting above the current top bidder? I've read that it's 10% above

I don't have the exact number confirmed from them directly, but yes, it should be something like that.
