What kind of popups is Google comfortable with(other than those after clicking a link)? Exit intent pop-ups work well. On balance, is it okay to lose a bit on SERPs?

Some cool tips here. You can have popups only appear on paid traffic not to loose on SERP (see 7)

Exit intent pops should be ok, so are pops that display when users navigate from one page to the next one. Also partial pops should be ok, so those that do not cover the whole display.
What google hates the most are pops that cover the whole screen and show right after a user comes from google, without doing any action, such as a click. Some people claim that timing the pops to show after certain time does help.

It's a numbers game

To give you an example, there is hardly any other more effective method of grabbing email lead signups than using a full page POP with a collection box, whether it's an entry POP or exit intent one... the entry usually works better. So if these leads mean a lot of business for you and you aim to collect as many as possible, it would make sense to sacrifice a bit of SEO traffic and still collect at a higher rate. The difference between a simple email collection box placed somewhere on the site and an intrusive POP is HUGE!
The key is to find some balance, you don't want to lose too much traffic as it will have direct impact on how much your site can grow. And this will be the hard part. You can test to add the POPs and watch how much traffic you lose. But once the POPs are on the site, you will never find out what would have happened to the traffic levels without it. It's gonna be a guessing game to some extent.
