Anyone using Google Tag Manager (GTM)? What is your experience with it? (6)

Anyone using Google Tag Manager (GTM)? What is your experience with it?

I am thinking about using Google Tag Manager (GTM) as the event-based system is quite interesting to fire external pixels, in particular to segment audiences on the fly. For example, on a dating lander with an "are you over 25" question, one could trigger a pixel to segment between above/below 25.

It could also allow to quickly change FB pixel ID in case of a ban without having to touch to the landers source code.

I am wondering if there are any drawbacks. Did someone use it? Did you experience any issue? Like domain flagged by Google Safe Browsing, or Google Ads account ban for example?

I’ve been using GTM for quite some time on WH stuff and never had any issues with it. Works like a charm!

The only issue that I have seen so far has been when using standard click tracker conversion tracking scripts that were flagged due to low reputation domains. But even in those cases the worse case scenario has been that GTM automatically disabled a tag or two. Issue that was solved quickly using a .com or .net domain, or even a subdomain of the main one.

Hi @jeremie,

We have users who are using GTM to fire tracking pixels or other pixels and everything is working fine for them.
They didn't report any issue or ban or anything.

It is a very flexible method that allows changing or customizing pixels without making modifications in the HTML of the landing pages.

Cheers!

I've found Google Tag Manager to be an essential addition to any site. It is extremely customizable and flexible, and once setup properly, most things can be configured without having your dev team do it. If you need a custom event setup, it's easy for your dev team to handle it.

Probably the best part about GTM is the Preview functionality that let's you see what tags get triggered and when. That saves a ton of time fixing tracking issues.

As for drawbacks, it does take time to do a proper GTM install. If all you need are GA and a few tracking pixel scripts, it might be overkill.

I hope this helps!

Yup, the setup seems a bit confusing. I'm looking at GTM now too, trying to figure out how it could benefit me... looks like a pretty powerful tool, but didn't decide yet whether to go with it or not

The main use cases for GTM are:
- organize all your pixels in one easy to run platform.
- instrument additional data collection and monitoring.

The later being quite complex if not complicated. But once you understand the core functions, it can be very useful.

Like with any additional scripts it adds to the loading time, but it’s insignificant since it’s meant to load asynchronously.
