Question To Binom-using People (16)

Question To Binom-using People

I'm struggling with Voluum Tier 1 plan if it comes to drilling down reports - only 1 level is enabled and plan upgrade is required to get additional ones unlocked.

I started to consider switching up to Binom as pricing is way more appealing but there is always a BUT.

Questions to any one of you currently using Binom:
1. Roughly approximating - How much do you pay to self-host Binom on your server? I'm not asking about Binom subscription itself but rather on everything besides that - hosting costs etc.
2. Since Voluum is AWS-hosted and redirects are optimized based on location - is any of you host Binom in similar way? What are costs per view in that case? As far as I know Amazon calculates pricing based on visits count.

I'm asking those questions to get better understanding of real cost of both services to base my decision on something else than guts feeling and personal preference.

Have made the switch from Voluum to Binom because I wanted a solution for much higher volumes.

Choosing the server:

--> best is to contact Binom support. They will tell you what you need.

Am using a Hetzner dedicated server that could handle 1.5mio visits a day. Price is around 50 USD/month. If I understood it correctly then for lower volumes you can even use a vps. So bottomline is around 10 USD/month for a server.

Redirect speed:

Infrastructure of Voluum is excellent. There are ways to achieve similar / same speeds with Binom. One feature is integegrated landers (saves redirect from click to lander). Also you could rent a server in your target geo. Probably there are many other options.

--> Best here: contact their support. The Binom guys have profound knowledge and they are very speedy.

About €50 or so for a dedicated server at Hetzner.

I use the server for tracker and landing pages.

As CDN and DNS for landing page domains I use Cloudflares free plan.

For tracking domain I use DNS Made Easy for $60 or so per year.

The DNS Made Easy plan should have limits but so far I never had to overpay.

You both are doing high-volume daily right? I will contact support regarding technology stack. I think that 50 EUR / month server would be total overkill for my current needs (doing <100k visits/day at the moment) but this is a thing I want to be sure of.

Thank you for such a quick response.

Yes, my server is powerful enough to handle 1M+ clicks a day.

As I said, I not only run my tracker on the server, I also host my landers there so I chose a server that can handle it both.

And in my opinion it´s not that much difference if I pay €30 or so per month or €50 so I better choose the more powerful option to have some more headroom if needed.

Hi twinaxe, Why do you use DNS Made Easy for tracking domain and not Cloudflare as DNS for tracking domain?

Good question

DNS Made Easy resolves a bit faster than Cloudflare DNS.

The difference is probably not that much but for tracking domains we don´t have that many options for optimization so I use DNS Made Easy to optimize at least a little bit.

Have actually tested DNS Made Easy Wanted also to know why @twinaxe recommended it.

My finding is that the "wait times" in the gtmetrix waterfall chart are a bit lower. Effect is about 100ms compared to Cloudflare DNS (CDN function switched off).

Yes, as I said it´s not that much but when you can´t really optimize other stuff it´s better than nothing

I am surprised by your findings guys.

When I look at benchmark, Cloudflare beats DNSMadeEasy

The waiting time is not the DNS, it is your server replying.

An other option to avoid this is to use tracker redirectless mode, so you skip the redirect time.

Sure, I know that resolving the domain names and the waiting times are different things 😋

I will be honest, I started using DNS Made Easy almost 4 years ago and at that time it was faster than Cloudflare and I didn't compare these both for quite some time again.

But good finding my man, maybe I should just switch to Cloudflare with my tracking domain as well.

Less costs and easy to use 🙂

Voluum has a lot of cool features such as DSP and automation but I find Binom workflow a bit quicker and easier to use.

Just my 2c

I'm glad that you pointed it out. I was about to give a DNSMadeEasy a shot.

I agree. Voluum is packed with features, but most of them are enabled only on higher-tier plans.

If it comes to automation - Voluum Automizer pricing is exactly the same as Optimizer.

Optimizer is my goto tool that I plan to use as I believe that if you focus your business exactly on one thing you get far more better results than packing that one thing as a part of a huge platform.

My main problem with Voluum is that they are so much sales-focused that even the basic functionality like grouping down reports with more than one variable needs higher tier.

To be honest I feel like I'm on the demo version of the platform even tho I'm paying for it.

I had a chat with my Sales representative and it turned out that to get that 3-variable report grouping enabled (i'm interested only in that really) I have to switch to another plan for about 800$ (i'm at annual plan atm).

So given the details you guys provided it is still far less expensive to get Binom yearly subscription + server alongside my current Voluum annual plan that to switch to higher Voluum plan itself.

Also don't forget to use STM coupon for discount should you decide to swithc to Binom
And as per server prices our support can provide with a referral link for DigitalOcean hoster so you'll have free $100 for 2 months there, it's also a way to save few bucks

Also good for me, will try to remind me to check such things more often myself

I checked several different DNS comparison sites now and yes, Cloudflare DNS is nowadays faster than DNS Made Easy.

Was different when I started using it.

But in the end it´s only an advantage because Cloudflare is really easy to use and it´s even free
