Help Needed with Database Opt-in
Hey Guys!
I'm looking for some advice regarding our US emailing databases.
We are looking to segment our data based on interests by using questionnaire type emails and/or "Welcome to this newsletter" type emails that confirm user consent and also give us better insight into what our user base is like.
Do you have any recommendations or newsletter type email examples we could draw inspiration from?

This is quite a broad question and hard to answer, but anyways
I've seen a few sample questionnaires that were sent to me when I subscribed to some newsletters. So this would be the option you suggested : "Welcome to this newsletter" type emails
But, these were mailed AFTER I confirmed the consent, I am pretty sure that if you make the questionnaire a part of the confirmation email, the subscribe rate would be lower.
So, those I've seen worked like this :
1. I entered my email in some collection box
2. they sent me a confirmation email
3. once I confirmed, they sent me another email with the questionnaire.
The copy of the questionnaire was always very simple... starting with a "thank you for subscribing" type of message, followed with explanation that in order to serve me better, they would like to know more about my interests and expectations.
I was more willing to fill out those that had pre-defined answers and I just had to tick those that I liked. When asked to actually type in my answers, I usually skipped.
As for the questions, you need to decide what to ask as you know what you try to find out.
To give you an example... I signed up for some food-related newsletter and the questions were all around my eating habits :
1. how often do I eat out
2. what are my preferred meal types (meat/veggies...)
3. how often do I cook myself
etc...
There were also generic questions about age/sex/weight/location...
Do not overdo it with the questions though, judging by my own reactions, if it took more than a minute or two, I didn't feel like taking part. 5 or so questions would be a good amount to start with.

You can also have a Google Analytics pixel on the page where you sent users after subscribing. It will give you some general stats. Not user by user allowing you to segment, but still useful.

I’m under the impression that you need to enable user id tracking first in order to at least map users with specific affinity categories. Would love to hear what others experience has been with combining GA insights with email databases.
Most probably with GA4 low volume audiences aren’t even giving much insights at all. Have you maybe played with it in terms of such use cases?

I have been doing some testing last month, but nothing at scale so far. I share your opinion. It is nice to have, but the level of insights migth not justify the time spent. It is on my list, but far from the top.
You indeed need to track IDs, which can be tricky in some cases. Here is the most comprehensive article I found so far.

Maybe the best approach to properly utilize insights from GA would be to send mailing list segmentation or tags as IDs in order to give more volume to GA, then sort out interests by segment or tag.
