Why Is My Retargeting GDN Campaign Performing So Poor?

Hi,

I mainly run traffic on native networks like Outbrain, Revcontent promoting mostly Ecom products, successfully. Now I decided to start retargeting on Google Ads.

I have placed pixels on my LPs and have an audience with a pool of about 10k people. Yesterday I started 2 campaigns. The differences were:

  1. One had "Targeting" at the Audeince settings
  2. The other had "Observation"

I was only bidding on keywords that are related closely on the brand or even the brand name (brand bidding is allowed).

They started getting a few clicks and spent about $100 each within a day and I got about 65-70 clicks each - according to Google (CPC was over $1, in Tier 1 GEOs). However, my tracking software only shows about 20 clicks on my LPs overall instead of the 130-140 clicks that Google shows. On the top of that there were 0 click thorughs on my landing page. These LPs usually have around 25-30 CTR.

I checked everything from the technical side and there's nothing really. Tried in different browsers, devices, countries and it tracks every single click instantly. The loading time for my LP is around 200-300ms and I'm targeting Desktop only. I use auto CPA bidding for now.

Is it possible that I'm getting lots of bot clicks or clicks that are not making to my LP? It's really weird. Feels like I'm not getting the traffic I paid for.

Has this ever happened to anyone? What could be the reason?

Are you direct linking to your LP? In that case, your server access log should have the requests and you can filter it based on the campaign parameters.

If you want to double check your tracker stats, install Google Analytics on your LP. Too late for yesterday traffic, but to analyze future discrepancies, it could be interesting.

Thanks for your reply. In the meantime clicks have became better and everything has been normalized.
