Does Google Penalize for OnClick Popunders

Hi all. I have a site in the adult realm and onclick popunders are pretty prevalent on big tube sites. My site doesn't get a ton of traffic but enough to where I don't really want to mess it up. In the past I think I had a one per session onclick popunder and I vaguely remember it being mentioned in webmaster tools but I can find no mention of it now. It may have also been that it was flagged as malware in Tag Manager but they seem to be flag happy, they just flagged some retargeting pixels I had added.

Does anyone out there have experience with getting penalized for having one on their site or know what the official stance is? I was going to post to the adult forums but that seems to be all paid adult topics.

Thanks!

I got a few sites penalized for excessive use of popunders... these were going to a broker (exoclick I think) and as you know, sometimes these can get chained and the user ends up in a loop. So I guess it was more about the content, not the popunder itself.

The google penalty associated with POPs was mainly aimed at the ones that covered the content straight away, this was a big topic 2 or so years ago. So the large signup boxes (for example) that popped up on-load, without any interaction on the users side. OnClick stuff should be way safer... thought you never really know with google.

Here is a quote from John Mueller from google :

“What we’re looking for is really interstitials that show up on the interaction between the search click and going through the page and seeing the content… What you do afterwards like if someone clicks on stuff within your website or closes the tab or something like that then that’s kind of between you and the user.” – John Mueller
So basically, they don't like POPs that appear right after someone comes from google to your site, but what you do afterwards (once they start clicking around) should be up to you.

Thank you for the info, I'll implement it and keep an eye on it just to make sure.

I never messed around with Big G but I could imagine that it makes a difference if these are auto triggered popups/popunders or if it´s on click triggered pops.
