Whitelists, Blacklists, & RON (Run of Network)
I notice people on STM emphasize the importance of having a whitelist or blacklist for optimizing campaigns and identifying profitable placements. From what I've been able to gather, you need to first start a RON (Run of Network) campaign for the traffic source you are promoting on in order to do this (if this isn't the case, please let me know).
Are there any threads/posts written about this? And are you able to do RON campaigns on all traffic sources?
If it helps, I'm using Voluum as my tracker and am using push traffic with Propellerads at the moment, and will test with Clickadu and probably Zeropark as well.

Hey,
In Vortex 40-day tutorial, there is a section on Whitelists & Blacklists:

Hey!
As Jeremie mentioned, Vortex tutorials are the best!
We recommend every advertiser to start RON. The reason to do so, is that usually different networks have different traffic, and therefore different results. What works on one platform won't necessarily work on the other, so it's best to test it RON and slowly building your own BL/WL.
The BL/WL you're building should be "vertical-oriented" - first build your BL/WL per campaign, then if you have one good campaign, save the BL/WL and try it on a new campaign from the same vertical.
Good luck!

And are you able to do RON campaigns on all traffic sources?
Usually you should be able to do so.
In the end you have to start somewhere and when you don´t have a BL or WL you need to run RON to gather stats.

With the exception of maybe ZeroPark
They have so much traffic, RON can destroy even the heftiest budgets in many geos.
Luckily, they’re always happy to give you a vertical, device, and geo-specific WL if you ask nicely.

Well, there are always exceptions

You can ask manager firstly about BL/WL, in order not to buy a lot of unnecessary traffic just for testing it for your offer, and after some time create your own lists

Yes, getting first rough lists from the AM can help but I only do it on trafficsources that have subsources like ZP or Pushground.
The thing is that the sources just can´t provide you lists as good as own lists because they just don´t have the info you have.
They can only tell you by the numbers they have.
For example these would be the number of conversions/conversion rate of their placements or subsources.
This however only works when the users post conversions back to the platforms but as long as you don´t run any CPA or similar campaigns where you have to send conversion info back to the platform there´s no need to give that info to the trafficsources.
We have it all in our tracker anyway and there we can keep it just for us.
For all other campaigns they basically only have info about how much volume a placement has, how many people are bidding on it, what geos and such stuff.
They also can check what verticals are promoted most on these sources/placements.
Then of course they can also see the bid to get an idea if it´s good or not, how much people are willing to pay for the traffic on these placements/sources.
But all that still doesn´t tell much about our own campaigns.
The network provided sources are basically just a rough list that matches somewhat to your campaign setup.
On "
normal" sources I always start RON and then build my own WLs/BLs because I always had/have more success doing it that way.
On platforms like ZP or Pushground I prefer to ask for WL for the subsources (Source on ZP, Supply on Pushground) and run blacklist campaigns then on these sources.
Lower quality sources have way more impact on the performance than lower quality placements.
That helps to control the volume and quality a bit but at the same time you don´t miss out on good placements that could be overseen with a whitelist provied from the trafficsource.
