Help increasing CTR for a Free Signup?

I joined here months ago, and after a crazy busy Christmas sales period I'm just finally experimenting with Media Buys on BuySellAds. Done a few different versions of my standard banner to try and get better ctr to my "3 free hypnosis mp3s" signup.

Just wondered if I could get a little advice or:

- if there is any master document on banners I can read or best practice on increasing signups - just general things that work that I can play around with?
- or if anyone had any insight into my banners themselves and things I could try?
- or if you guys have any "go to" designers who can work a bit independently and actually know what gets clicked rather than just working to client brief alone?

Here is what I have so far and the results:

Thanks in advance for your attention, really inspired to be in here with you guys!
Dan

At first i was like WHY does the 3rd banner have such a high CTR! ..but it has no clicks. So i'd say all those banners would be similar in CTR

The main things I'd recommend you do is:
1. Keep it simpler, less clutter, more white space will increase CTR
2. Throw in a picture of someone, not your avg face, but a face that will make someone look twice. Example, a face with neon paint on it...

As long as it doesn't lower conversion rate, things like this will definitely help with CTR!

always follow the KISS rule when creating banners, ugly works. keep it simple stupid.

@stackman not everyone likes party rock Monday's. (neon paint)

But yes I agree with stackman on the clutter points. However you need to pull back from there some more.

And answer why would someone want to get free hypnosis mp3s? Why would it benefit them?

You need to have a stronger sales line e.g.

Quit Smoking For Free - Download Your Hypnosis MP3s Now.

Have Trouble Sleeping? Start Sleeping Like A Baby. Download Your Hypnosis MP3s Now.

Once you figure out what benefits you want to mention, start creating text banners with blue links. Keep it simple, then you can start getting more creative later.

Yes, after another few days it evened out and was very similar, so yes, obviously I need to do something really different.

Thanks! Thanks so much for the input guys, I really do appreciate it, I've made some new banners based on your suggestions. The site I am advertising on is a health site (allhealthsite.com) so I have focused the message around health hypnosis to target the visitors to this site specifically.

I have made them KISS simple, I have made them ugly, and despite wondering how a neon woman ties into hypnosis and self improvement, I have included one (I'm here to learn and will follow your advice even if it seems strange to me.. hate it when people ask for help on forums and then just use their own (wrong) judgement anyway) - will be interesting to see the results, and I will follow up with them here in a few days once I have enough impressions and clicks.

I could be wrong, but I don't think people are generally wanting to "improve their health". They want to lose weight, they want to have better skin, they want abs, they want to quit smoking.

I think you really need to test each individual one, instead of promising all.

There is still more text than you need.

Would you click your own ad?

Yeh, you're completely right, only it is a health based site rather than a weight loss site, but our opt-in it is to 3 generic albums - one for relaxation, one for concentration, and one for self belief... very generic albums that anyone can try, experience and get benefit from - we don't give away a weight loss hypnosis album... these are our best sellers...

.. but I think we will still advertise on weight loss sites in the future, trying to get the opt-in, and mentioning weight loss... but I like everything going into my one 4 month autoresponder.. they take a long time to build, its proven, established again, and I cringe at the thought of having to write other alternative massive autoresponders... would you just do this, or would you tell them its weight loss and let them click then land on a page that obviously doesn't give any weight loss hypnosis mp3s out? ... against decent quality try traffic from JVs these 3 free albums do get a 30-40% opt-in rate so they are of interest to people..

Ok here's what i would do which is a mix of everyones input, i'd split test it with what you got, and i really want to see the results so please post here!

From your new banners remove: "want to improve your health safely, naturally, for free?"
and for the 1st ad:
"Improve relaxation, concentration and self belief naturally for free! Wondering how? CLICK HERE (underline: click here)

Make a 2nd ad:
"Improve relaxation, concentration and self belief naturally for free! Wondering how? See Hypnosis in action! CLICK HERE (underline: click here)

Try different background and font colors, but leave as much blank space as possible. Keep the images you have on the 2 banners as well. and then report back!

Thanks everyone, thanks Stackman, I'm still here, didn't want to needlessly bump my thread without more results. I like your suggestions Stackman, I had already made a new batch though and wanted to see the results first, theyre in now, so now going to axe the ones underlined in red, keep the ones in green, and split test your suggestions against them:

So:
- 1&2 - not that much difference between them, will keep the original one as seems to be working better than the naff one I tried to make. This is my actual one I give to affiliates so will keep it as a control copy..
- 3&4 - less is more - the one with less text on stands out more, or I dunno, just gets clicked more.. I'll keep it
-5&6 - pretty face vs weird face.. the weird one wins.. still skeptical that this will actually be the click from the person I want / person that will subscribe rather than someone who is clicking just thinking "wtf is that", but ill keep it as standard for now, if it keeps winning then I might think of "other unusual images I could use that catch the eye but aren't quite so obscure to my actual opt-in... (?)"

So going to keep the above winners, and based on your suggestions Stackman, I've made the following banners - I will post them now and wait 5-7 days to get some stats and re-post back:

Should be interesting! (I personally think the 1st one will win.. seems more eye catchy with the bigger "FREE" and already proven that the weird face gets clicked) In the future hopefully i'll keep trying and find better and better basic banners, and then optimise them with animation, flashing etc... but ultimately also need to try better sources, as yes, as mentioned Health isn't our best area, need core personal development, law of attraction, and weight loss.

Try These...

- Images on the left ALWAYS performs better for me on 728's

- Use the "Name" and "eMail" fields in the banner - it gets great CTR's...especially if you can have a blinking type field

- Relaxation, Concentration and self belief are 3 vastly different things. Focus on single measurable things: "Increase your concentration by 72% in 3 days" Mr.Green's smoking example is spot on.

- Make "Download Mp3" your call to action

Ok, so the results are in, and as expected the weird faces pulled in best:

How come the top one is only getting 0.5% click through now... is it quite normal for your banners to slowly die? it was getting 0.12% at one point.. still rubbish I know, but is this just normal, the regular traffic gets used to the banner and doesnt look at it / click it anymore?

Thanks deondup for the suggestions, I'll go and tweak some of the above and implement your suggestions now - any other thoughts and suggestions are welcome, I plan to keep tweaking and testing these banners every single week and would love to be able to double the click through again from where it is now

Interesting campaign!

- I agree: Each banner needs to pinpoint a specific improvement like weight loss, self belief etc. Not just "Health".
- Be more creative in your copywriting.
- Images to the left.

I have attached a few quick examples I just made.

Good luck!

wow, Cheers man, I really appreciate this! I've already removed some of the lesser performing ones and I've put these 2 straight on Really like them, think they look good

This isn't just a campaign to try for me, it's my business and if I can learn banners and make it work (I can pay $1 a signup and buy to infinity..) then I will scale up a LOT... I want media buys / banners to bring in a lot of traffic for me, but happy to just learn the basics on small sites, learn what works, take my time, be patient, put the groundwork in... never to big to learn something new etc..
