Why do I need an SSL Certificate for PPV?

Hi, I'm getting ready to set up some campaigns and a 30 day challenge with PPV.
I just was wondering, why do I need an SSL Certificate?
As the 40-day STM Guide suggests, I'm going to get a domain with whois protection and an SSL Certificate. So perhaps you can help..... Can you check out this Namecheap.com link and suggest your best choice for SSL for a PPV set-up? I'm not sure which one would be best.

SSL cert for secure pixels if the offer requires it

if your tracker domain is tracking.domain.com, make sure your common name is tracking.domain.com, ssl cert is needed because certain cpa networks's pixel tracking link have to be https not http

And this is true I fmy tracking domain is domain.com/track ?
