How important is internal linking in SEO?

How important is internal linking in SEO? Is it a big factor? I ask because I have stumbled upon this tool called linkwhisper (linkwhisper.com) which promises that. But I am not sure how important it is currently as a ranking factor. As you all know things change so fast that here that something that worked 6 months back will not work at all now!

I'm no SEO expert at all, not even intermediate, but internal linking have been giving me good results continuously over the years, and is a must part if you ask me. And not just to please the robots, but for the user experience too - suggest relevant content to whatever the visitor is seeing.

Also, hint, I got great results on giving established sites a boost by installing a "Glossary" (inner-dictionary?) kind of functionality. I can't guarantee this works everytime for SEO purposes, but it's been 3/3 for me in the past ±year and a half.

Do you do it manually or use a tool like linkwhisper?

Never used this service/tool before. Let me know if you try it.

I just used "Glossary" kind of plugins for the appropriate CMS, all major ones have it. Plenty of free ones for wordpress

Internal linking is important, but the external ones still account for way bigger effect... even though I got websites ranked without much link building... with google, there is always a bit of mystery

But SEO effect aside, you need to put focus on internal linking, because of the user experience... as "youreadthis" suggested above. The best start of any whitehat SEO strategy is to build your site with the end users in mind.

Properly designed and organized website will keep the users longer on the site, they will view more pages per visit, the bounce rate will be lower...etc. And these are all important SEO factors too.

Right! Google's a mystery, but I think it's not cent percent guess work after keeping abreast of the updates and connecting with the right people who know Google better.
Then on a personal level, I was super scared of creating contents and not getting traffic from Google. Like all my effort wasted. But now with a bit of insight, no worries at all! The contents can still be used in too many other ways.
