What are your alternatives to popunder traffic? (6)

What are your alternatives to popunder traffic?

Most of our publishers have completely stopped to serve popunders in Chrome Browser due to the well-known Google Abusive Ads Report.

It seems that Google is serious this time.

We have tested other formats recently and as a consequence launched the full-page interstitial ad format as the best alternative. We aim to achieve similar performance as with popunders and first trends show we are on the right path.

What are your alternatives to substitute revenues from popunders on Chrome?

Have you tried other similar formats? What is your experience with this so far?

Let’s discuss this in more detail.

Is this a new thing? I know they tried to push these policies quite some time ago, as a result number of sites stopped serving pops and also introduced new rules on ads, but it settled down quite a lot since so I thought it was over. Did they announce some new regulations, I must have missed it.

As for other formats, looks like the in-page push format will grow, which is a small rollover banner actually, or like a small popup. Maybe try to look at that one. It used to be called IM-pop in the past, it got phased out from the most part, but it's coming back.

Are you doing anything with the PUSH format at all? The future for this one is uncertain aswell, but for now it works.

Floating footers could also be an option... I mean that format that moves as you scroll, low in height so it looks like a toolbar basically.

Sounds like an advertisement to me.

I know several affiliates who are still crushing it with pops only.

In the past it was sufficient to just update the way popunders are triggered. Now none of the big sites passed the Google review with any solution they tried - we were in close contact with a few of these sites. Pretty much all the big sites stopped. You can see yourself if you like to check. So it is much more serious than the first “wave” of just regulating them.

Absolutely good solutions. However those formats usually do not bring similar eCPMs to publishers or similar conversion rates to advertisers as the pops did. The only format we see with similar rates, being able to substitute the popunder format, is the full page interstitial.

Our push solution is being finalized as we speak but as you say the future of the format is uncertain indeed.

Yes agreed, but again, the rates are not comparable to popunders, so it´s another additional format. In this segment we also see the video sliders working well (a banner sized video ad).

Just to clarify: On other browsers than Chrome pops are being run as before. Only on Chrome they are getting banned. Besides that it is indeed the case that many mid- and small sized sites did not get flagged yet. However you can see that on pretty much all big adult sites pops on Chrome have been taken down already.
Google started flagging the big sites first apparently to send a signal.

An excellent alternative to popunder - Interstitial, as it complies with the requirements of the Coalition Better Ads and CPMs are similars to popunder's.

How it works:
It’s a full-screen overlay. Interstitial ads appear to cover the full screen after visitors click on any link and can be dismissed by the visitor easily if desired. After the advertisement is closed, the visitor redirects to the link.

5 reasons why Interstitial:
1) Google doesn’t ban for this ad format, interstitial complies with the requirements of the Coalition Better Ads.
2) Interstitial is much better suited for clicking on target= “_ blank” links than everyone’s favorite popunder.
3) Great for triggering after a click on the player. After closing, VAST advertising will start; this is also noticeably better than any pops on the player.
4) There is a callback option. For example, to start a video after closing ads.
5) CPMs are similar to popunder's.
