how can one test new angles without writing copy? I suppose you say to copy what others use, right?

Yup, that's the easiest way to quickly collect some benchmark data. The next step is to make changes to the copy, or completely replace it, in an effort to beat that benchmark.

Keep in mind that in many cases you don't need to change the whole copy in order to improve the results... there are certain parts of the LP that naturally attract the "eyes" of the users, so focus on those: headlines, CTAs, the imagery. And don't forget about testing different copy on the ADs too.

There are companies that focus on this, for example landingpageguys.com or https://bannerslanders.com/... but it really can get expensive, especially in case of long/advanced LPs. On top of that, you never know whether the copy is going to work, until you test it. Even the best copywriter can write a copy that simply won't work... so at least run some tests with ripped LPs first, so you can provide them with something that performs that they could build on.
