Hey all-
So with the breadth of knowledge and intelligence on this forum, I thought a useful thread might include thoughts on how this awful Coronavirus business is going to effect things in the world of IM over the next few weeks/months/etc.
I don't have any particularly bright predictions, but here's a few things I thought about:
-We've already seen rise of Face Masks in the ecom space, so could definitely see more and more survival-oriented gear like that (did see one 'Survival Listicle' already on Revcontent as well that mentioned the virus in the ad title)
-It seems as though discretionary spending (especially stuff like dating, weight-loss, etc) could see decreased interest and epc's, as people hunker down and only spend on what's required
-On the other side though, it seems as if people may be far more inclined to do their purchasing online to avoid having to visit large stores, which would be bullish for IM/media-buying
-Obviously there's the massive issue of China and ecom supply-chain logistics too, but I have no expertise in this area with which to base any hypothesizing on
Anyway... would love to hear everyone's thoughts, as it seems that in one way or another this thing is going to affect IM just as heavily as every other industry...
What do you think?!?
Everyone will always want a Free iPhone, even with the zombie apocalypse on the horizon
I mean, how else will you post to your friends on FB about the danger zones to stay out of to avoid the corona virus Zombie Apocalypse?
That being said, there will always be marketers coming up with angles on how to sell stuff. You already gave some great examples.
I've seen dudes on Youtube in Japan showing how to make your own mask, since they're sold out everywhere.
Wanna know how to make a real mask that will protect your from Zombies? Yeah, a sock with a rubber band ain't gonna cut it. Click here for my free ebook on how to make real survival preppier gear from the pros!
Shit. I should be doing that.
I've seen quite a few FB posts by dropshippers, these guys seem to be affected the most. The production in factories that were affected should be resumed soon (some already were I believe), so we shall see what happens next.
But for the other verticals that don't rely on any supplies from the affected Chinese regions, I didn't notice anyone complaining, yet.
However, things are starting to happen in EU too, Austria closed borders for train traffic from Italy. Several other countries are thinking about some sort of additional checks on the borders and air traffic might get limited soon too. Spain has problems too, for now mostly on the Canary Islands... but that virus will likely not stop there.
So all is set for another panic round, this time in Europe. Logistics for all kind of goods is about to suffer somewhat... there are already photos of empty shelves circling on the net.
Some verticals will definitely change for a while ... the travel niche simply has to take a hit for sure.
For now, nothing major happened ... but if the virus keeps on spreading, the economical damage can be huge.
The survival offers could benefit from this for sure... it takes some balls to capitalize on something like deaths caused by coronavirus, but I have no doubts that we'll see "heroes" like this
I'm really curious about the next month or so, this should show us what to expect next.
It depends a lot on how much it spreads and how scared people are.
If people stay inside more often, they also consume more content there so impressions on all ad platforms should go up, thus prices likely to go down.
E-commerce from China should definitely be the hardest hit though until they are back at full steam.
For stuff that's all digital, shouldn't be too bad... The more people are inside/on their devices, the more impressions there are to go around for everyone.
People will be able to work in angles how to take advantage of whatever consequences are (for example stock market going down, "here's my course how to win when the market crashes").
Hopefully there will be a specific treatment and a vaccine for it soon so all this panic around it goes away and it's back to business as usual.
Interesting discussion!
Everything I know and have heard has been brought up already, so no comment.
Survival gear and food will sell well indeed. Over here in Canada there are people that have started to build a supply of food and survival gear just in case.
I am testing some discount diapers and other "baby prep" stuff via FB, quite subtle. Great cpc's, good engagement, only waiting for the point people will get scared and start buying all kinds of stuff to survive some weeks when the first lockdowns appear over here! ;-)
