What else would you expect from a unicorn?
so let me start with this to explain what magical thinking is...
Go print out a picture, preferably a headshot, of a family member your close to, it can be your mom, dad, kid, wife etc.... and then stick a knife through it.
Can you do it?
Does it feel funny?
maybe you wont even do it
why not? Its just a photo right?
Welcome to magical thinking
Crazy right?
So how can we use it?
Well as you can see from the paragraph above most of us would hesitate because there is a story behind that picture....we all know that its just a picture....but our brain attaches more to it....like by destroying it we are somehow being disrespectful or hateful or bad luck etc...
so the simplest way that you can use this to your advantage is to attach a story to what your trying to sell....once you make the object "more than it really is"....you give people a reason to want it....as it becomes much more than just an object....
and by story I don't mean benefits and claims...I mean more of a creative history about the product or a colorful story about its creation, myth, lore...etc....you make it out to be something much more than just a face cream or some diet pill or whatever it is your pushing...
we as humans attach ideas to objects and all sort of other stuff as well....often to unrealistic heights....
these tactics can also be used in the negative as well to push people another direction.....
again with the same example above if given the choice to tear up the photo or pay me $1....what would you do?
does it cause you stress? anxiety? tension?
those words are our friends and we can use them to give people an easy way out....a solution to ease that tension....herd them, if you will, down a funnel or a path....
to sum up....this isn't something you can use everyday....but in those places where you can use it it can be a very powerful tactic to have in your bag of tricks...
