I think nothing changed in this field in 2020.
Your best bet is to reverse engineer your competition, use tools like Ahrefs/SEMRush (paid) or UberSuggest from Neil Patel (free) to do keyword research.
Enter your competitors URLs into these tools and grab the list of keywords they are ranking for, look for low keyword difficulty keywords.

If your niche/blog is "hand crafted red light bulbs" it takes probably some weeks/months to rank on first page. If your niche is "casino" it takes several years to get a decent ranking.
Where to put keywords? Where are they relevant on your website or blog?
It's more about getting inbound links to your blogposts from other websites with high authority than"where to put certain keywords" Use them if they are relevant in your blog, otherwise don't.

Hey there, my first post at STM ... being successful in online gambling verticals as an affiliate seo.
Erik shows you the right way. But I depends. If you're "in your niche" you will have "automatically" a feeling for good search terms and you can use them to start your search.
Ahrefs is a great tool for any seo related stuff.
All the following stuff is a content and a link building game.
You run a website already?

Social Networks are important too.
Few years ago I had a short collaboration with a guy.
I built a website for him and, of course, the website was not ranked on google.
Then, he linked the website to a FB page (relatively small, few thousands of likes)... and the website was in the second page of Google the next day.
You always have to apply the "hand crafted red light bulbs" vs "casino" concept, but I guess that Social Networks can be a big boost in every case.
P.s. The FB page was not even related to the website... he just changed the name to be the same as the website.

The basics pretty much remain the same for years... put keywords in the meta tags, H1, H2 and H3, use them in the internal links, repeat them a couple more times in the text, put some in bold, some in paragraph titles ... The crucial part, do not overdo this, the keywords should be used in a natural way, so the text also reads well. Stay low with the keywords density or you will get penalized for keyword stuffing.
But these are still just on-page factors, the off page stuff is more important... links and the anchor text used, links from social media (as luke mentioned above).
And keep in mind all the other ranking factors, time on site, bounce rate, page loading speed... these are important too
SEO takes time, but it simply rocks when the "free" traffic starts coming in.
