Overcoming Paralysis by Analysis and What "Failure" Taught Me

So, as I recently re-joined STM, I thought it would be a good idea to share some thoughts regarding my "comeback" to AM/IM and some learnings from past experiences (a.k.a. "failures").

I had basically two periods of time were I did AM:

1- Lots of years ago in the age of Adwords direct linking to CJ, Clickbank, and so on. It was sweet for some years but it got to an end and I couldn't adapt--so I quit.
2- Years later, in the Native era and not so far away from today, I did some native ads AM with mixed results. Some very good months, others in the red; it was overall inconsistent. Adding up the high testing costs that native has, I also did quit.

What "Failure" Taught Me.

Over the past months I came to see failure in a different way. I understand now that failure is part of any creative process and that it's needed to achieve anything significant in life. So, I am kind of embracing failure, or at least looking at it with less fear than before. Yes, fear, don't see that word often right? But I am not afraid to tell you that I have fear of failure, just like many of you. I'm trying to adapt to that and understand that is part of the process.

Shiny Object Syndrome. You probably know this one. You try something, launch a couple campaigns, don't get instant results and you get distracted by the next big thing, ad network, offer, or even a totally different business model--without investing a considerable amount of time to fail, learn, and get better on something.

Paralysis by Analysis. So, another well-know one. I kinda like details... OMG! yes, I am doomed -So, yeah, I like to get to every detail and has been over-analyzing things for too much time. I am looking at things a little different now. I will be doing analysis, but I need to start taking action way before, like a 10-90% thing.

We can achieve anything if we are determined and really commit to it. This is probably one of the most important lessons that I am discovering after years of interacting with great people that I came to consider mentors or coaches. But it needs focus, and it wont work with 100 different things at the same time.

So, what is the plan?

I am analyzing to build the plan but at the same time, this is what I am doing in terms of thinking and executing:

Thinking

- I need to stick to a geo+vertical and do more pop/push testing.
- I have been reading a lot about eCommerce+FB... that is something that I want to try, but I need to stick with something, so not sure which way to go yet. It will be great to test both ways...but you know, focus!
- Hm, what about Native? I used to do that.... no, no... FOCUS!

Executing

- I read Amy's 40 day tutorial.
- I have been testing some pop SOI offers with PopAds to test the waters.
- I like the idea of Push. I got an AdPlexity subscription and I am looking into what is going on out there.
- I got an account in some sources (popads, propeller, ZP).

So, now that I shared a glimpse of what is on my mind, I will love your comments and feedback

Thanks so much,
Dan.

Yo welcome back to the game Dandan!

Very true, it takes a great deal of commitment to achieve something and especially in this industry. Setting goals and journalling helps you to maintain a compass pull towards where you ideally want to be, I think many come in a bit aimless and like you said with all the shiny objects floating around it can be mayhem for traction. You here one day push is killing it, then a thread or conversation pops up another day and you here Facebook is killing it etc. Have to focus.

I've been a big fan of the discipline/surrender notion lately, to find balance in setting certain desires and working towards them but always remembering to let go and remember life can fill in the gaps if you're paying attention to opening doors. Abundance or Scarcity its all up to you

Anyway dude, following this and really hoping you can find some traction:

- I read Amy's 40 day tutorial.
- I have been testing some pop SOI offers with PopAds to test the waters.
- I like the idea of Push. I got an AdPlexity subscription and I am looking into what is going on out there.
- I got an account in some sources (popads, propeller, ZP).
Good start, Amys guide helps a tonne to bridge gaps of all the basics. If you see a common lander on Adplexity popping up a lot, chances are it works, rip it (always clean the code!) and trial it in a geo you don't seem to see it on, ask around for the top networks regarding the offers you want to run, plug the offer in, put in 2-4 banners you see out there on these campaigns, and then throw in 2-4 banners you think may work. Theres a good little way to get the feet wet with high chance of landing early profit and learning from all the processes too.
