Just curious. Also, how do you usually detect such a thing occuring?

Often. You mostly notice it when CR is unstable, especially when you are going to scale. Just emphasize (again and again) you want clean payouts, without scrubbing. It's way easier to scale a clean offer since the CR will be far more stable!

How do you go about bringing up the subject? Do you find that confronting them like 'hey are you scrubbing my leads bro' is a good way to go or emphasize upfront to not scrub leads like 'hey i'm going to scale this offer, please dont scrub leads'? It'd be pretty awkward either way to go over that with the AM I'd imagine.

From start I always ask if the payout is clean before starting the offer. Otherwise you face shitty CR's from start which makes it even harder to get a decent view of the ROI. Just say I know a lot of guys are scrubbing, without blaming you I just want honest payouts and campaigns, no bullshit. It's not a sin to ask for honest campaigns, BUT most networks/affiliate managers expect affiliates want the highest payouts. Make clear from start you don't need high payouts, you need a stable CR/EPC.

Hello,

The best way is just to split test the same offer between several networks. Also you can try to work direct with advertiser.

Just a tip: When talking about this topic with the AM, proceed with caution I got into a rather ugly discussion with 2 AMs in the past, they took it kinda too personal, thinking I'm accusing them of fraud. Needless to say we didn't do much business after that conversation What worked for me was to use what stickup suggested :

Make clear from start you don't need high payouts, you need a stable CR/EPC.
So not really mentioning scrubbing, but suggesting that you would take lower payout instead of a high one that comes with optimization scripts enabled
