Unveiling the cloak: A look at what happens when you click that link
Here at STM we do not really talk openly about cloaking, but here and there people have questions about it.
Recently I came across an interesting presentation that took place at ZeroNights conference (which is an interesting rebel/underground concept by the way, talks are mostly about security)
Presentation was complied by Ilya Nesterov (Threat research scientist at Facebook) and Sergey Shekya (Software engineer at Shape) who did the actual presentation.
Here are some of the topics covered:
- Comparison between cloaking in 2007 vs. 2018
- Beginner (naive) cloaking systems vs. more advanced ones.
- Real user vs. user emulation.
- Example of ad platform survival times
- How companies detect cloaking
- Fraud around cloaking in cyber underground
- etc.
I think it's in interesting talk to understand what cloaking is all about and how companies like Facebook fight against it (and they really know and study the cloakers affiliates use), but also how hard it is to detected it, emulate real users and so on.
