Selecting widgets on RevContent

Hi all,

This is probably a really stupid question, but I've seen posts referencing that you should select specific widgets to display your ads on via RevContent... but I can't actually find a way to do that when setting up an ad? I only have the option of 'topics' or 'brands' and brands are the biggest sites only like Breitbart etc.

Sorry if this is super obvious!

Thanks

That would mean creating a whitelist campaign then.

However you still need to have a list of proven widgets for your offer/vertical otherwise you might be leaving other possible good performers out.

Hey Sam-

So there's a variety of ways to target in Revcontent.

You can target Brands, which are large sites Revcontent lets you target directly.

You can target Topics, each of which includes hundreds or even thousands of sites related to that topic (including the Brands referenced above).

Within both of those, you have the option of doing either 'blacklist' or 'whitelist'.

In blacklist, you can add widget id's to a list of widgets to be blocked.

In whitelist, you can add widgets and they will be the ONLY widgets targeted.

So if you select Editorial_News and Conservative_News as your topics, you could start blacklisting widgets and end up with a blacklist of 350 widgets, and in that case that campaign would be running ads to every widget in those topics EXCEPT the 350 you have blacklisted.

On the other hand, if you target Editorial_News and Conservative_News and select 'whitelist', you could then add a list of 50 widgets you get from Adplexity or wherever, and those are the ONLY widgets that will get clicks. (*Although typically if you are going to do a whitelist you would just select 'all topics' since hypothetically you would be adding all sorts of widgets without neccesarily knowing which topic they are even a part of, and if you add the widget without its corresponding topic being targeted my understanding is that it won't get traffic.)

There is also now a feature called 'widget by widget bidding' that your rep can enable, where you can bid on widgets individually, and add them individually, etc.

And then to do all of the above, you are going to go to your campaign and select 'Targeting', and its within that part of the campaign dashboard that you can configure your topics/brands/widgets.

Or you can get the excellent product 'TheOptimizer.io' and just do all the configuring within there

After creating the campaign, go to the campaign targeting and select widget optimization on the top right hand of the screen

You can either "target only" (whitelist) to display to selected widgets only or "blacklist" to display to all available widgets within your campaign targeting excluding the selected widgets.

Ideally you would want to create your own lists by running campaigns and gathering data on each widget's performance trough trial and error.
However if you're starting from scratch, it would be extremely overwhelming as you might end up receiving tremendous quantities traffic from low quality / fraudulent widgets

if you're looking for a whitelist as a starting point before you are ready to build your own - you could either

If you're going to start building up your own list I suggest to run a few of topics at a time instead of running them all at the same time to minimize initial losses and do not forget to set a daily budget to avoid blowing your whole account balance because of a handful of high volume fradulent widgets. As Jack mentioned, you could also use a third party API system like theoptimizer.io to automatically block widgets based on different criteria

Good luck

You can always buy from RevContent through Earnify. We are connected to all major native networks and we're completely transparent meaning that you can target domain names instead of having to deal with blind widget IDs. Attaching an example of our create/edit campaign page below.
