First of all, welcome to the forum. 
Is joining STM a mistake? Absolutely not.
Last week someone asked me about my experience with STM as a new member. Here is a quick summary which I believe will help you make the most out of this outstanding community.
Intro
I would suggest that you write a short intro you, your experiences and your goals. That way users will know what you are aiming for and will be more willing to help. Like in personal live, the first impression is important also online.
Follow Along
From my own experience, I can tell you that follow-alongs are the most powerful stuff for newbies. I switched my vertical 3 times and every time I opened a new follow along and tried to keep it updated regularly. The information, connections, and know-how I received from these follow along is hard to describe, really!
I'm sure that with detailed follow along you have way more chance to make decent progress, as a newbie or experienced marketer.
Another good thing about FAs is that people will see that you are serious and determined to achieve your goals. At the same time, you will also help other newbies who will read your follow along and will motivate them to make an action or just learn something from you.
Let's wrap it up, here are top 3 things you can expect from this forum.

2) Connections That Will Help You Progress
3) Accountability*
*Maybe this is not in your case, but I had issues with accountability in the past. When I opened a follow along It helped me to take actions because other STM users helped me with their pieces of advice and it would be stupid not to test it.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer:
- Develop your marketing skills and knowledge in a matter of just a few months, from total stranger to mid/pro level performance oriented marketer. This by just reading the information already shared in the forums.
- Get friendly support and assistance from well seasoned performance marketers like no where else. (by far STM has the highest number of online members at any given time of the day compared to other forums)
- Being part of a premium community (no spam) of like minded people where you can openly discuss about technical stuff, strategies and best practices.
- Get to know to the latest competitive advantage tools you never new existed, because the random guy you are talking with is not willing to share it with you.
- Minimize your startup operational costs by leveraging special deals or discounts that you cannot find elsewhere.
In addition to the above, a super important thing people tend to ignore quite often, is the ability to discuss stuff 'behind closed-doors'.
A good example would be the not so long lasting / supersaturated strategies most affiliate marketers use to trick Facebook ad platform. Why so? Because quite often they are discussing this stuff on FB groups. Which basically is like discussing your illegal activity stuff directly with the police department.
Also it depends on your expectations.
When you sign up here as a beginner you can get good help to get started.
As an experienced affiliate you can get new inspirations, find like minded people to talk to, build new business partnerships and so on.
As a trafficsoure or CPA network rep you can find new customers here, keep updated about promotions and new features/offers/whatever.
But when you expect to come to STM and automatically make $xxxxx/day just because of the membership then you will be disappointed.
