How Do I Improve CTR on Chrome71 (it is 6x lower than Chrome43!)

Hi Everyone,

I've started running some desktop pop campaigns and I noticed something really startling.

[1] The CTR on Chrome71 Browsers is about 6x less than that of Chrome43!!!

I would love to nudge the CTR on Chrome71 closer to Chrome43!

QUESTIONS

[1] I'm going to dive into using browserstack to figure out if it is a programming issue on the page.
BUT I wanted to ask if there might be other reasons for this I should also check for.

For example I keep hearing about latest versions of chrome stopping pops, ads etc.
But this is traffic that has been 'popped' and reached my lander so I'm not sure if that is the issue.

Anyway, any advice on what to check or to try/test would be appreciated.

Chrome 43 is almost 4 years old.

You should compare Chrome 71 to Chrome 70. I guess CTR will then be about the same.

So you could rather ask why your CTR on Chrome 43 is 6x higher. But even if you find an answer, this won't help you much I guess... But if you want to know it: drill down one or two levels deeper, maybe you'll find that a specific target/site is sending you 100% of that Chrome 43 traffic and that target/site has a very high CTR.

^^ valid suggestion.

If nothing comes up there...then I would come to the conclusion you are dealing with a less tech savvy demographic.

It tells you a certain something about the demographic if they haven’t updated their browser for 4 years.

I checked on browserstack and there was no difference in usability between Chrome71 and Chrome43.

@osmiumman - I looked into the zones and the same zones were having different CTR on Chrome43 and Chrome71. Also there was no significant difference in CTR between Chrome70 and 71.

@Mr Green - I think you have a very valid hypothesis I should test. I'm running sweeps and it could be they are more tech savvy or just are not attracted to free sh%t as much as someone on a older browser might be.

WOULD LOVE YOUR IDEAS ON ....

My current hypotheses are:

[1] Chrome71 people are more tech savvy and so won't be attracted to Sweeps (i.e. they have seen them before)
Question - What other types of offers would be good to try on these people?

[2] Chrome71 people are more affluent and less likely to want free sh^t we are promoting on sweeps
Question - What other types of offers would be good to try on these people? Entertainment (Mobile Apps)? Anything needing a Credit Card?

[3] Chrome71 people are just fed up with pops which bypass their adblockers. I'll test that by trying the campaign again but without the Traffic from 'Anti-Adblock Zones'.

Very interesting @grofit!

I checked the top performing verticals for Chrome 71 in ZP and here's what I found working:
- mobile apps
- shopping
- surveys & sweeps
- binary & trading

I would definitely go and test mobile apps as the discrepancy between #1 Mobile Apps and #3 Sweeps is big.

Thanks @zeropark!

I'll have to check some spytools to dig into what sort of Mobile Apps they liked best (unless you happen to know)?
Entertainment - Movie Apps, Game Apps
Tools Apps - Battery extension, Better Photos

UPDATE
***************
Also an update
[1] I checked traffic from a source which did not bypass the adblockers ... and it was about the same CTR as the traffic that did bypass adblockers.
[2] I went through Browserstack again with a fine tooth comb and found one area in the initial popup which looks different in Chrome71 than it does in Chrome43. I'm testing a new lander today to see if it makes a difference (I don't think it will, but you never know until you test!)

After those tests are complete (hopefully tomorrow), we can eliminate it being a problem with traffic source or if the page looks different for chrome43 and 71.
And concentrate on what offers will appeal to them the most :-)

I'm already a member of Mobidea.
Are there any other networks would people recommend for Mobile Apps, especially in Tier 3 countries?
