I have a good friend who has had great success with SEO, but wants to transition into native ads or Facebook ads promoting affiliate/cpa offers.
He has a budget of about $10k-$15k to work with that he doesn't mind losing.
I told him that Facebook ads might be the better way to go as a newbie since you don't have to worry about bot traffic, but I wasn't 100% sure since I've never done native ads.
So wanted to hear your thoughts...
If you're a newbie with a budget of around $10k-$15k... would native ads or Facebook ads be easier to create success in?
I was in a similar situation recently- although transitioning from a different fulltime business rather than SEO, but with time+money to invest and wanting to go "all-in" on media buying.
I considered various traffic sources and even tried Bing and Youtube ads briefly before deciding upon native.
I never considered Facebook because I didn't want to deal with worrying about getting my account banned at any time without reason (I experienced that with Youtube ads and it was very frustrating).
I felt like native- because it was more affiliate friendly, and because it was more 'manual'- was a better medium in which to build a long-term scalable and sustainable business.
With all of the above being said, there's certainly no shortage of people who have achieved incredible success getting into facebook ads, and no shortage of people making millions on facebook (probably far more than on native, if I'm not mistaken, as Facebook is so stinking huge).
It also probably depends on what he wants to promote. If he wants to promote SaaS stuff like Clickfunnels or Aweber or webinars, I'm sure Facebook is better.
If he wants to promote vsl affilliate products like on Clickbank, then I'd say Facebook's not really a choice and to definitely do Native.
If he wants to lead mortgage and life insurance lead gen type stuff I think you could do either or both.
But yeah, I wouldn't let the bot traffic dissuade you from Native as a whole... maybe specific networks if you're really worried about that... but I think in that regard it wouldn't be too different using Outbrain vs using Facebook... and there's ways to avoid the bot traffic or at least make it rather inconsequential to your outcomes.
And of course he could always try both for a few days and just see which platform he finds more intuitive...
But yeah, I'm still quite new at this and there's tons of people on STM infinitely more educated and experienced on this topic than me so I look forward to hearing what thoughts they share on the subject
Actually, to piggyback on the above and more specifically answer your question... if I was him I really might just force myself to spend 500$ each on facebook and on at least 3 of the top 4 native platforms (Outbrain, Taboola, Revconcent, and MGID) and then just decide which one matches his personality best... I think certain people really connect with different traffic sources if that makes sense... that might be more costly in the very very short term, but could end up being way better in the long-term if it helps him pick the best platform for his style+needs.
Tell your friend to spend some money on both of traffic sources. Many people in AM make their first dollars from Facebook, native, pops or even push traffic. So deciding before testing is not good at all. After testing, choose whatever floats your boat.

If that person has never run affiliate campaigns before, then native is generally going to be much more affiliate friendly, mainly in the the case of networks like Revcontent, Content.ad, & MGID where you can run some pretty aggressive campaigns, and it's easy to spy and rip things and get going. It can however be expensive to learn relative to other sources, so I'd recommend starting out with low to mid payout offers in tier2 geos, or at least avoiding US in the beginning.
