Hello stm,
Few points I'd like to mention that my own tests, success, and failures have determined.
1. Http to Https - My last 4 tests on different domains, less than a month ago, showed very minor ranking gains. To be honest with you, the gains may have not even come as yet. So far, no loss of ranking that I can contribute to https switch. I would recommend changing your sites from http to https as google is now starting to show a red exclamation mark next to the address bar whenever a user has to enter any info on your website. To have a green lock, you need https. Preferably dedicated certificate.
2. Indexing of content/links - For new websites and small websites in big industries, the standard to be an indexed page has not changed much, BUT the rate or how google is filtering for the criteria of a link to be que'd for indexing has changed. That might sound confusing. So basically if you put up a new page, its of value, google will index it. What I am saying has changed is how google decides to even consider you for indexing now has shifted.
I feel that Google is now disregarding (ignoring) links from certain platforms/websites/blogs/directories/etc.. as it knows, through ml probably, where a legit link should pop up vs what's being built. So suggestion here would be go back to the foundation of link building if you build links yourself and really understand why the link you are about to build belongs there.
3. Content - There is a ton of misconception or theories for this topic. To answer this question... just think about it... if you came on to the stm forum everyday and found information which didnt satisfy your desire, would you come back? Well, most wouldn't and on top of that, you may even cancel your membership and use the $100 on a pair of shoes, or some nice gloves in my case.. my hands are literally freezing atm. So if you are able (this is a BIG 'able') to answer the question that brought the user to your page in the first place, then you shall conquer. Present that answer in a better way than everyone else, you win. Wait.. you win the content % of the battle. The rest 70% still needs to compliment the content. You hardly see a stunning woman with good sense of style, dripping of sophistication, act like a disgusting little baby... with the exception of my x.
Build quality, with everything you do for your websites.
4. The 'Google' dance is more aggressive than ever. Google is going through a core shift I feel. I feel its testing between 2 or 3 hypothesis of its algorithm to see which one is more usercentric. Who knows this might be to cater to voice search which is almost here.
This is all for now. It's been a while.
