Cutting Zones (am I missing something?)... (21)

Cutting Zones (am I missing something?)...

So I'm wondering if I'm missing something with the zone IDs...below is a picture of one of my campaigns:

First questions is, is there a way to cut zone's that don't show zone ID's? For example I'd love to cut that first URL in the list (along with others)...but there is no zone ID for it\them.

Also, it's not necessarily happening in this campaign...but sometimes I'll get a zone that shows MANY times for different URLs...some perform great and others horrible...under the same zone ID. Is there any way to separate those types of sources?

Would appreciate any input on this, been driving me nuts.

Hey Greg can you please post a screenshot of your traffic source configuration? Maybe it is a tracking config issue that is not allowing you to get the zoneid as an ID but rather working with referrer urls.

Also, some zones have gone way too far in terms of impressions and lp clicks.

Don´t check the referrer, from the screenshot I can see that you are running Propeller Ads.
There you can only block the zones and not specific referrers.
So just check if the zone for that campaign is overall good or bad and blacklist accordingly.
You can´t optimize what can´t be optimized.

Hey Platinum, thanks for the response...

Now that you pointed that out I went and checked...all my other traffic sources are showing all the zone ID's (although this one - propellerads - is the main one I use for now).

This will help a TON for making campaigns profitable, I was starting to think that just not getting certain zone IDs back was just a part of the process!

OK, so in my tracker I had the postback URL http://ad.propellerads.com/conversion.php?aid=217848&pid=&tid=45566&visitor_i d={clickid}&payout={payout}&zoneid={zoneid}

But I think that it was suppose to be: http://ad.propellerads.com/conversion.php?aid=217848&pid=&tid=45566&visitor_i d=${SUBID}&payout={payout}&zoneid={zoneid}

Do you think this would be the change I need? Thanks a ton! If I get that problem squared, that will make it 10x's easier to get these campaigns I have going profitable!

Ohhhh twinaxe I see what you are saying...maybe I'm just checking in the wrong section of my tracker and need to go to tokens ---> zone ids

I got it...that is huge. Thank you both so much for the help! Game changer for me, I was just looking at the wrong area...thinking that I just didn't get zone IDs for certain stuff!

I was starting to get pretty frustrated with some campaigns!

Wow, already took a campaign at -79% to 10% profit in a matter of an hour. Thank you both! Have a lot of campaigns to play with that I just couldn't turn profitable before!

wow congrats! how many placements did you cut, out of curiosity?

and welcome back I saw in your FA that you were looking at which campaigns to continue and which to axe -- I think Amy's original tutorial days 5-6 may be helpful to review for that

I cut about 40 placements...all the low CTR ones or ones that just had obviously bad conversions.

This is the difference already...after just a few hours of cutting the placements.

Crazy missing one thing like this can change everything...I have tons of campaigns like this that I just thought I wasn't getting zone IDs for that I can now go back and play with cutting placements.

Wow man nice lolol - That must be a huge boost to the confidence!

Hey Greg, amazing follow along. I'm a bit behind you, reading your journal has been a big help.

I'm currently on setting up Binom with propellerads, got myself a bit confused on what the postback should look like in Binom's traffic source.

Was wondering did this end up being your proper postback url format? http://ad.propellerads.com/conversio...5566&visitor_i d=${SUBID}&payout={payout}&zoneid={zoneid}

It's amazing how one little mistake like that can make all the difference! Thanks platinum and twinaxe for coming to the rescue!

This is the postback you would use to post conversions from Binom to PropellerAds. Are you sure you're not looking for the postback for posting conversions from the aff network to Binom?

Ya I think so. In binom under traffic sources I was looking to see if Gregs format of http://ad.propellerads.com/conversio...5566&visitor_i d=${SUBID}&payout={payout}&zoneid={zoneid} was correct.

for Binom in my Aff network tab for Mobidea I have click.php?cnv_id={{EXTERNAL_ID}}&payout={{MONEY}}

Haha you have no idea! I was dreaming about this stuff last night

jresults, the way I had it was correct (this is what I have in my tracker):

Code:
http://ad.propellerads.com/conversion.php?aid=217848&pid=&tid=45566&visitor_id={externalid}&payout={payout}&zoneid={zoneid}
At least that's the way I have it and it seems to be working for me

Call me paranoid, but I don't like to send conversion data to traffic networks (not propellerads in particular, but traffic networks in general).

Some traffic networks have their own internal media buying teams. Plus you never know if some of the employees are doing their own thing on the side. (Disclaimer: Personal opinion that in no way reflects those of STM. And it's a general opinion not directed at any specific traffic network.)

The only exception would be when running CPA campaigns, where passing conversions back is essential.

You're not paranoid Amy - unless we all are

Definitely hide whatever data you can when possible, that opinion is quite reflective amongst the community

OK, I love that insight Amy & maynzie...so I always get this confused...where do I take out that information so it will still track zone IDs in my tracker? Or what change\where would I have to make?

Oh just don't set up the postback for posting conversions from the tracker to the traffic source! (The one you and jresults were talking about.)

The placement data will still appear in the tracker as long as the token is still in the traffic source settings in the tracker (e.g. {zoneid} for Propellerads). So that when you create a campaign in the tracker and choose Propellerads, the resulting campaign url will contain this token.

So just to be clear..in my tracker, in traffic sources, I do NOT need the postback URL section filled out correct?

In case you don't want to pass conversion data back to the traffic source, simply remove the traffic source postback url from the traffic source configuration on your tracker.
Of course, before doing this, you have to make sure you don't have SmartCPA campaigns running, where as Amy mentioned above, conversion postback is a must:
