Big SEO Tip For Ending 2018 Going Into 2019
One of the big ups to being an "SEO coach" with OMG Machines (I guess you could call it that) is that I get to see TONS of data (on top of all my own data from hundreds of sites and test sites); but also what some of the most common mistakes are that people make.
And without a doubt at the end of 2018 and going into 2019, one of the biggest mistakes that I am seeing people making is not focusing enough on building RELEVANT links to their HOMEPAGE.
This is especially true when there's is specific inner pages that someone wants to push up, where they just start slamming that inner page with links...often times getting more links to an inner page than to their homepage (this can work but it's pointless with the way SEO works today). Whereas if they kept building relevant links mostly to the homepage, that inner page would naturally move up...and in most cases LIGHTLY hitting the inner page would get much better results for that page and across the whole site (since the homepage links will naturally help all other relevant inner pages on the site).
Google has shifted a ton towards wanting authoritative sites to rank. And by authoritative (what they are looking for right now) I mean sites that are themed around a specific topic - which is done by building relevant links to the homepage. The more relevant the links are to the homepage, the less links you need for inner pages that are in the same category.
One of the big mistakes people make is trying to hit their inner pages too much, when if they just keep building the relevance\authority of the homepage, those inner pages will naturally follow and a lot of times they barely have to hit inner pages.
In most cases these days Google picks authoritative SITES over authoritative PAGES. Of course you can have both (and may need both for more competitive niches) - but make sure to start on that homepage first. Building up mostly your homepage relevance\authority will save you a TON of investment\time\hassle.
If you have any questions on this just let me know, it's a very important concept to grasp to make SEO much easier on yourself right now!

Another solid tip, thanks for that
Was this always the case though? I remember that during my SEO times, like 5 years ago, we used to hammer inner pages with lot's of links and doing well with that.

This one makes sense.
But still, doesn't it should be a healthy mix of all kind of links, so its all just natural as possible?
Thank youu for another great tip though Greg!

That makes so much sense!
When we analyze the backlink profile of the more authoritative sites, we'll often/mostly find that a majority of the backlinks are built to the homepage, not to the inner pages.
Will keep this in mind for the next sites I'm setting up. Thanks for the tip Greg!

Wow, Greg, thanks for so detailed answer, I did not expect that!
Highly appreciate your answer!
May I ask if you also have recommendation on building site structure, so the juice is distributed with maximum effectiveness across the sub pages?
Do you use (or recommend) something like SILO structure?

Great answer, Greg!
Do you use SILO structure? Which links do you make most of the time (niche based outreaching or PBN/Web 2.0)?
Thanks Erik & Leadcloak!
I'll silo if it makes sense...so if I have a ton of sub topics on many different topics...yes I will.
But in this case, we are only covering one topic and the domain is doing the job of identifying that topic (since it has mold removal in it), so there was not need for a silo in my opinion.
If I was doing a more general site that covered many different topics in many different areas, I would have silo'd...for example:
HouseWork.com/mold-removal/cities-here
HouseWork.com/roof-repair/cities-here
HouseWork.com/bathroom-remodeling/cities-here
Etc, etc. I think sometimes people silo just to silo...I'll do it only if it makes sense for organization.
Also, I mainly use PBN and guest post...but I always analyze competitor links and steal their best links as well!

Thank you, Greg! Yes, stealing competitor's links is best strategy so far but that doesn't apply for PBN links

Awesome Greg, you dropped some Golden Nuggets!
One of my older client sites had more links to the most imp inner page than to the home page and it seems to be struggling a bit(compared to the other sites where I'm Ranking Top results) Though in last few months I've already been focusing more on Home page for this site..but as it is...past deeds play a vital role in Seo
Incidentally this site is in the Health niche(Btw Lots of relevant links to both home page and the inner page)...so the medic update has a role to play here as well(which I'm yet to crack
as every single site I have is Ranking in Top page except the ones in health niche post-August)

I'm not talking about citations, we built those to every page initially and the homepage as well. I'm talking about links that I manually went and built with PBNs, guest posts, articles, web 2.0, blog commenting, etc.
Can you show me how you can create backlinks from the PBN and guestpost?

It's pretty simple, for guestpost you need to get footprints like "Comment" + "KW" example - site:facebook.com etc. You'll gain a lot of places to put your link. For PBN, you need to hunt or buy them. Setup, Create some article and link to your homepage. It's ok, if they are niche related to your site.
