[advice] Building our own traffic source and finding publishers in bulk.
Hello everyone,
We're building a traffic source from scratch and the main idea for now was to mass cold mail webmasters/publishers with a non-intrusive e-mail letting them know that we're a new traffic source and accepting new publishers with a high overall payout and to contact us to our e-mail if the webmaster is interested.
What other ways can someone suggest in finding publishers (for both mainstream and adult traffic) in bulk or a few bigger ones in general to start off, manual mailing of site webmasters in their contact us form is also an option but would require a huge amount of time. Any advice would be much appreciated.
There are commercial data scrapers you can get, that will allow you to scrape the whois info of alexa sites. You can get a copy of the top million alexa sites if you do some looking on google.
You can also use builtwith.com to search for sites that are already selling ads to existing networks and offer them a better deal.
I don't have experience with building a network, but that's where I would start.

Here are some more tips for you :
1. Another step to take is to go to forums where site owners hangout, in adult it's quite easy, there is the GFY forum... you can try there.
2. For mainstream sites, explore places where bloggers are, check FB groups ... you can try to get in touch with owners of the bigger blogs too.
3. Get a bigger fish on board and smaller ones will follow, since they will notice who the ads are served from ... make a small textlink visible in the banner or below it, like native networks do. To get a few of these big fishes, you can make a prepaid deal with them ... that's one of the only ways you can actually make them switch to a new network.
4. Paid advertisements ... target the right keywords on google or target the right audience on facebook.
5. Paid/sponsored articles on blogs with the right audience.
6. Conferences ... but the right ones, where these publishers actually go. You got an adult one in Prague in september for example ... TES.
7. Large adult sites are selling traffic packages ... so a given % of their global rotation ... get a small one from them. Be warned that you will be responsible for what kinda ads you serve, and fines are usually part of the deal.
8. Try to look for some sites with decent traffic and buy them, this way you would have traffic to test the system properly and test new functions with ... and it would also help you to spread the word.
