How do you produce X vs. Y content at scale without getting you're fingers smacked for competing content?

What do you mean by "competing content"?

OK, so say I sell promote phone service providers. I have long-form in-depth reviews for each provider that does well for both brand name, as well as long-tail shit like "AT&T network coverage usa" and other stuff.

With this update, I'd want to also build pages like "AT&T vs. Verizon". But given that I already have in-depth ranking content for both at&t and verizon, I would run the risk of confusing G on which page is more relevant to users searching for either of the two.

It sounds stupid, but that's how it is in the niches I work in at least; kill pages + merge content = stronger results. However, I'd like to dip into this honeypot as well. I just need to find out what is the optimal way of doing it.

Doesn't sound stupid at all. Makes good sense. Although I haven't done SEO for a few years now and the game has undoubtedly become a lot more difficult to play, the basics should still be similar (I'm guessing).

Ultimately, without an actual test, we'd only be speculating. If I were you, I'd create a new page with just a comparison chart on it (maybe with 1-2 sentences as the intro, and make sure it contains the main keyword phrase that includes "comparison" or "vs." or something along those lines). Add as many features as you can to the chart.

I highly doubt something like that would confuse google to jeopardize your established pages - google isn't exactly known to be stupid. The distinction would be really clear: Your in-depth product/service reviews probably contain mostly sentences, while the comparison content would be in chart format. If google can't tell the different between the two, it wouldn't be what it is today.

I have an authority site - which I haven't had time to update in ages - where I used to post game cheats, mobile app reviews and smart phone reviews etc. And I found that the comparison posts were always very popular (e.g. "iPhone 5c vs. iPhone 5s, Which One is Better?") So, SEO effects aside, content like that can potentially increase visitor engagement on your site. Worth a shot IMHO!

And if you're extra cautious, you can set up one such page, then wait a while to see whether your other pages' rankings are negatively affected before proceeding to create others. At the first signs of anything bad, remove those pages.

Just my 2 cents on what I would do though. Like I said, I haven't done SEO in ages - please take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Thanks Vortex, I'll run a test and see how it goes!
