Direct to offer (via presell) vs Email opt ins

Hey,
New to the forum and relatively new to affiliate marketing (well, taking it seriously anyway).

I've been running FB ads to Clickbank offers in the weight loss niche, via a presell lander. I've been having mixed success with ROIs up +100% one day and down to -100% the next. So struggling to get much above breakeven.

I can get decent CTR (over 10%) and LP converting at 25-40%. I'm having a hard time with the offers converting at 1% or more. Have tried a few that supposedly sell well.

So, it's cold traffic so I can't expect stellar conversions and maybe presells could be better (obviously I need to take care to stay compliant with FB policies).

What I'm looking for some thoughts on is whether I'd be better trying for email opt ins off the ad and then selling via auto responder where I can say what I want instead of creeping around FB. Warming the traffic up and getting better overall conversions (naturally I'm going to lose some traffic due to hitting promotion tabs and spam boxes).

The downside of that is that I wasn't wanting to become a "weight loss expert" which I'd need to become to get decent open and click through rates from the emails. I was enjoying the ad and LP creation and seeing the immediate results! (yeah, I know, if you want to make money, you have to work for it).

I know the answer is probably "test it and see if the ROI is better" but wanted to draw on the thoughts of the experienced marketers here.

Thanks
Paul

From my "limited" email marketing experience, by collecting and up-selling, you can make more in the long run, but only if you plan and execute it properly.

If you think that you can simply collect subscribers, then slam them with tons of emails and reach high profits, that's wrong thinking. But with the proper setup ... lead magnet+some good content+valuable info sent in the emails ... that would get the prospects interested and they could convert well in the future. So yes, you pretty much would have to become a "weight-loss expert" in order to fully utilize the list ... or at least give the impression that you are one.

Or you could take the aggressive route ... collect emails, spam them to death, resell/coreg them ... will take some planning too, but the results should come in sooner. But so will the complaints, which might pose a problem with FB.

With such varying roi how much may I ask are you spending per day? Usually people see inconsistency on lower spends say -$100~200 but as you begin to increase volume your metrics should be a bit more consistent - bare in mind some days of the week will fluctuate and you'll probably spot trends sooner or later

Thats exactly right, its two different approaches. One will cost more in testing and figuring out, but you may from it result in having more consistent income over time. Where as buying traffic and profiting merely on conversions will probably be faster profits in the beginning but when campaigns slow down the income is not there.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, spamming the crap out of a list isn’t the way I want to go.

Maybe picking a niche that I could really get into is the better approach for an email marketing focused strategy.

Re the spend - I’m around 100 per day.

Or alternatively you can just collect subscribers to your messenger list. Same idea as email list, but you dont need mailing soft, can always broadcast, upsell , add personal touch and market through there.

Better open rates, more personal touch and much faster results imo that way!

Hmmm. I’ve not really looked into messenger before. Do you still have same compliance issues as ads? Or more freedom?

I guess there will be restrictions on how many you can message in a given time period and if they complain, it might get you in trouble ... or?

I am switching my traffic to this style as well. doing lead gen to offer but wrapping it around a branded style website. Long run I think it is more beneficial but this is also new territory for me being a BHtter and all. so I am curious to hear your results as I will post mine as well
