40 Day Follow Along (19)

40 Day Follow Along

Intro
Hi, my name is Ryan and I am new to affiliate marketing. I've done some local lead gen via SEO and craigslist but looking for more scalable income and also learning new skills that can transfer from offer to offer and traffic source to traffic source.

Goals
Learn paid traffic!
Find a mentor!
Blinders on!

Strengths
HTML/CSS/some PHP
Problem solving
Really good with the Google

Weaknesses
Follow through. There are so many shiny objects out there it's so easy to get distracted if you don't have your blinders on.

Budget
I have some passive income at the moment so I don't need to worry about bills atm. I am going to dedicate $3k to this for spending on traffic.

Time
I have 30-40 hours per week to dedicate to this joruney.

Completed
Day 1
- Signed up for Mobidea
- Signed up for PropellerAds
- Subscribed to Voluum
- Purchased domain
- Configured DNS for tracking

I am going to finish up the day by reading the suggested threads. I will be back on Monday for Day 2.

A special thanks to vortex for creating this guide!

40 Day Follow Along

Hey Ryan, just reading your post. I’m a newbie here as well with paid traffic and have a similar budget as yourself.

My strengths are problem solving, data analytics and finance. I’m not really all that strong with HTML and some of the other more complicated tech stuff.

Maybe we could get a mastermind group started. Would be beneficial for us both. I’m running/testing mobile pops -following the 40 day tutorial. Working on landers now and expanding to other affiliate networks to have access to more offers.

Thanks command for starting this follow-along!

You have coding skills. You have the time. You have the funds. In other words you have everything it takes to succeed and more! Now just follow through - easier said than done I know. But I wish you all the best!

One piece of advice at this stage: Don't spend too much time direct-linking to offers. Set up a couple of those just to get some practice and hopefully make your first couple conversions. But then move onto the lessons on landing pages ASAP. Direct-linking just isn't half as lucrative as they were before - all the changes in regulations killed these offers.

Looking forward to your subsequent posts!

Amy

Day 2 Completed

Selected Brazil as the GEO I will be working in. Select 6 offers, applied to them and one was approved. Still waiting on the others. Offers have been recorded to the sheet.

Also, reached out to my AM and asked for recommendations but havent heard back from him yet. Also reviewed vortex's Supplemental Material subforum (https://stmforum.com/forum/forumdisp...ental-Material) and browsed the top "40-Day Pop Tutorial - Mobidea's Top Offers for Direct-Linking" thread for offer ideas.

Decided to stick with the original 6 offers since none on the list fitted the GEO or category criteria. Trying to stick to the tutorial as closely as possible (although will move on to landers after i've successfully setup these 6 offers and thrown some traffic at them - as per vortex's recommendation).

**QUESTIONS FROM DAY 2**
I noticed in Mobidea the payout currency is in Euros. Is it possible (or even necessary) to change this?
Edit: To answer my own question, its not necessary because when we set the Global postback in Mobidea, we can set the currency.

Day 3 Completed

Day 3 walkthrough was pretty straight forward but still made my head spin!

What I accomplished:

-Added new affiliate network 'Mobidea' to Voluum

-Configured global postback on Mobidea

-Created new offer (1) in Voluum

-Created new campaign in Voluum

-Added new traffic source in Voluum

Actions and Reason For Actions (correct me if wrong)
-----------------------------------------------------------
ACTION: Added new affiliate network 'Mobidea' to Voluum
FREQUENCY: Each time you join a new affiliate network where you will be testing/running offers.
WHY: This is done so in the next step, you can setup a global postback URL in your "new" affiliate network, so they can remit conversion info.
--
ACTION: Configured global postback on Mobidea
FREQUENCY: You setup the global post back URL one time for each affiliate network you want to run offers on.
WHY: With this global postback URL, affiliate networks will know exactly where to send conversion data about your campaign. After running traffic, the affiliate network will automatically postback this info to Voluum for my analysis. It also helps publishers weed out sources of poor quality leads.
--
ACTION: Created new offer (1) in Voluum
FREQUENCY: Create a "new offer" for each offer you are testing.
WHY: Each offer you create will allow you to specify a path for Voluum to send traffic to.
--
ACTION: Created new campaign in Voluum
FREQUENCY: Everytime you are working with a new combination of "vertical, conversion flow and the product itself."
WHY: Allows you to split test several offers to find a winner.
--
ACTION: Added new traffic source in Voluum
FREQUENCY: Create a "new traffic source" for each new traffic network you are using.
WHY: Allows you to analyze datas based on traffic source?
--

**QUESTIONS FROM DAY 3**
None. Please let me know if any of my reasoning above is flawed or needs correcting.

Tomorrow will be day 4. I have PropellerAds loaded up with $100.

Day 4 Completed

Before starting Day 4, I went back and added in the 5 offers that were not approved as of yesterday but were this morning. I thought I should create a new campaign for these 5 new offers (in both Voluum and Propeller) but ran into a roadblock when I came to the 'Targeting' section, which reminded me that not all offers are approved for the same OS's. So I stopped right there (I did read later in Day 4 that there are redirect rules you can setup for these situations in Voluum).

That does bring me to a question about Step 11 of the Day 4 walkthrough...

The guide says to choose "3G" as "Connection Type". There was no option for this so I selected "Mobile" and moved on.

Day 4 Action

Day 4 walkthrough was also pretty straight forward. I ran one campaign at $0.85 CPM (the indicated maximum on PropellerAds) and got my first 2 conversions! Milestone completed! After that campaign used up its $10 budget, I also went back and ran a duplicate campaign at $2.33 CPM after reading Amy's reasoning for this initial bid. From my understanding, this is done to remove a variable. We run the traffic at a higher CPM so we can collect data from decent quality traffic knowing at the very least we won't be left wondering if poor results were due to poor traffic quality.

Here are some screenshots of my Mobidea, PropellerAds, and Voluum dashboards:

**QUESTIONS FROM DAY 4**
Two questions, the first was already mentioned about regarding 3G targeting in Propellerads (no 3G option - dashboard updated?).

The second is regarding the discrepancy between the amount of conversions recorded in Voluum and Mobidea dashboards? I've heard of clickloss before so I understand thats inevitable but does this happen with conversions as well? Does it need more time to update?

Tomorrow will be Day 5-6. Looking forward to learning more about campaign optimization!

Command, hey!

Seems like one of the leads came from the different target, that's why it was redirected to the Smartlink. Also, check if you have a postback for this specific offer turned on.

You can see by yourself from where the lead is coming in your statistics if you choose the Smartlink

Thanks for your input Mobidea!

I did a quick read up on Smartlink here:

https://stmforum.com/forum/showthrea...ined-in-Detail

and here...

https://www.mobidea.com/faq/smart-to...tlink-work-73/.

I also noticed the SmartTools page in the Mobidea dashboard...

Not sure this situation applies to me since I did not activate this feature yet. In PropellerAds the target was set for Brazil only and carrier TIM. Are you saying that I may get leads from different targets on occasion regardless of the my traffic source campaign settings?

Are you also saying that Voluum was unable to track this conversion because it was not the original offer landing page?

Voluum is still displaying 1 conversion from that campaign and Mobidea says 2.

Here is the offer setup in Voluum:

Here is the Global postback setup in Mobidea dashboard:

Thanks again for your help! I will be starting Day 5-6 shortly.

Even if you didn't activate the Smartlink, but have activated safety fallback, the wrong target will be redirected.

In the case you set up Brazil Tim, the wrong target could be the type of device. It might have come from the desktop, not mobile. (you can also check it in your statistics).

Volume probably counted only Safety fall back conversion. You have a correct global postback. Nevertheless, please check if you have the postback inside the offer turned on.

Good luck with Day 5-6!

Ok got it. Thanks!

I updated the offer's postback URL with the same one used the global postback URL.

This step was not covered in day 3 of the walkthrough, there may be a specific reason Amy decided not to include this, I hope she gets a minute to chime in.

Day 5-6 Postponed > Fast Track To Landing Pages

After reviewing the content and optimization flow charts provided in Day 5-6, it is probably best that I just jump right to the landing page section in Days 19-20. I will return to the Day 5-6 and the others in between after setting up some landing pages to test on my current offer that converted once (or twice, depending on which dashboard you ask). I will not attempt to look for new offers at the moment because I have no idea where to even begin and what to look for so the offer I have is as good as any.

I am going to spend the next few hours reading the suggested threads and other instructions provided and formulate a game plan for tomorrow.

This step was not covered in day 3 of the walkthrough, there may be a specific reason Amy decided not to include this, I hope she gets a minute to chime in.
The reason is simple: I haven't had time to update the tutorial to reflect all the changes. I WILL continue to try hard to find the time to do so - It's been on my mind for a few months but other work kept coming up to take precedence.

Good on you for skipping to landers! Direct-linking is only for practice on setting up a campaign - since the time I first wrote this tutorial, making profits via direct-linking has become a lot more difficult.

Pick a vertical (type of offer) first. Go to Adplexity Mobile to see what types of offers/landers are available, choose one, talk to AMs to find out which geos are doing well for that vertical right now, and start gathering offers and landers. A good vertical to start with is sweepstakes or sweeps for short - stuff like "win an iphone x" or "win a Tesco voucher", that sort of thing.

Please feel free to ask plenty of questions in the process!

Amy

I am still here! Been doing some maintenance on my passive income stream. Hope to be back at it by Tuesday latest.

Here I am - the newest of the newbies to STM!

I have some experience in IM - t-shirts, AliExpress, FB ads, Clickbank, etc. from a couple of years ago. I had limited success with those; then life got in the way, and I'm just now trying to get started again.

STM was highly recommended by an extremely successful internet marketer whom I really respect and trust, so here I am.

It looks like the 40 Day Tutorial is where I should be, but I don't know where to get started with it. (How embarrassing, I know!)

Thanks in advance for any and all guidance!
