My takeaways from Apple's WWDC'18 regarding upcoming Safari privacy updates

So I watched Apple's keynote from WWDC '18 last night, which is a tradition for me for the last 10+ years.

It started at midnight in my timezone and even it's the biggest marketing event for Apple, I like to keep up what those guys have for us a many time it shows where the whole tech industry is heading.

What I noticed yesterday were an interesting privacy feature updates that are coming to Safari this fall (and other browsers may or may not follow as it usually is).

PRIVACY is a huge topic these days and Apple took it to another level as they are going to block widgets on websites like Facebook comments, like and share buttons and so on.

You will have to allow whether you want to see/load them.

Not sure how it will work in practice as almost each website has now some of these and it may become pretty annoying if an user will have to click it each time.

Another interesting privacy feature was that they will try to limit FINGERPRINTING.

Fingerprinting is a method where even you think you are anonymous, there are still things in you browsers that can identify you: your system fonts, installed extensions, screen resolution etc (hey FB farmers, you probably know what I talk about).

Safari will make you look same as every other Safari user, so it will be harder to fingerprint.

We will see how these will work in the real world, but definitely we can see a shift towards more privacy, which in general is a good thing.

Others will probably try to follow as well.

Here are some more resources I dig up about the topic, more will probably come as the event was just this night:

Safari has already taken action. We've noticed that our Safari traffic converts 4x better when using https secured links as compared to unsecured http links. We don't see these kinds of results with any other browser.

Woah, that's huge difference!

But I think many networks and offers still doesn't have https in their tracking link and offer pages.
