Facebook's War Against Fake Accounts

Facebook has disabled almost 1.3 billion fake accounts over the past six months
By Kurt Wagner and Rani Molla May 15, 2018, 10:00am EDT

Facebook disabled nearly 1.3 billion “fake” accounts over the past two quarters, many of them bots “with the intent of spreading spam or conducting illicit activities such as scams,” the company said on Monday.

Most of the accounts “were disabled within minutes of registration,” Facebook claimed in a blog post, but Facebook doesn’t catch all fake accounts. The company estimates that 3 percent to 4 percent of its monthly active users are “fake,” up from 2 percent to 3 percent in Q3 of 2017, according to filings documents.

Those numbers are big, a reminder of what Facebook is up against just 18 months after it was learned that a Russian troll farm used Facebook to try and influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Facebook says it finds most of the accounts on its own using software algorithms, but a small percentage — about 1.5 percent of the disabled accounts — were discovered after they were flagged by Facebook users.

Good move in my opinion. Facebook cloaking is really not the right way to do business. I met countless people at affiliate events making very big numbers with the shadiest angles I would never dare to try!! Kinda unfair...
They may try native next though which is not what I like personally, Enough competition already and if those pages convert better then the average bids will increase even more.

Holy shizen!

Whoever is writing the algorithm to snuff out the fake accounts must be having a field day!

Ofcourse they had too, after all the shit they experienced last months. Send out a message to the world to repair their image. I can confirm their algo isn't that much to be honest (luckily), regarding fake accounts for affiliate purposes.

What I find the most interesting is that they claim to have over 2.2 billion active accounts in June 2017 and then they report the deletion of 1.3 billion fake accounts in the following 6 months or so ... so how many real FB users is there actually? The numbers don't make much sense. I know that many of the deleted accounts were brand new and that a ton of them is created on the fly all the time, but still ... 1.3 bil simply sounds a bit to much.

Here is another article on the subject that addresses the numbers : https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/f...ml?cid=sf01001

Well, FB clearly should show to the world that they are making everything possible. Maybe, it's for good and the quality of the user experience will raise up the conversion rate. Of course, for each rule, there is a loophole, but honestly, we have been always saying that for the longlasting stable business you need to play fair.

I think they have some kind of - if login once a week -> then called active. Lets say FB has 6 billion accounts, only 2,2 billion login regurlaly, 1.3 billion are found fake and the rest are just sleeping or don't match the criteria of "active" , and a part is still also fake ofcourse.

Yeah definitely cloaking is not now the way to make business. We initially didn't want to move to WH but now we're just running WH. Thanks for the info.
