This text is not only about
But when I read around here on STM I see that still mostly
Sure, Voluum is a good tracker and had superior features when it first was realeased.
But in the meantime there are several selfhosted trackers that are as good and even better than Voluum (of course everyone has it´s own preferences).
In my opinion the problem is that still Voluum gets recommended for newbies who often don´t have a steady cashflow established already.
Now let´s get to the point, recommendation for newbies is still to start with Pops because it´s a cheap way to get something going so that they can save some money.
On the other hand there is much potential for saving money on the tracker side.
Voluums pricing model is based on events, with the $99 plan you have 1 Million events included.
The problem is that 1 Million events is not equal to 1 Million users.
User visits your tracking link = 1 event
User clicks through to offer = 1 event
User converts and sends postback = 1 event
You see, a converting user is 3 events, now you can imaginw how fast these 1 Million events are used.
So when newbies start with Pops just as they are told they run a trafficsource where they can get very high volume for cheap, especially when they run big Tier3 countries.
And I am sure every newbie running volume will sooner or later realize that tracker costs will add up and can easily go as high as few hundred dollars, and that for Pop traffic.
With Pops it´s very easy to run such volume even in the beginning.
So the problem is the combination of high volume/low quality traffic and event billed trackers.
My tip for all newbies, get a selfhosted tracker (I absolutely recommend Binom, I will write a review about it soon), get a decent server for landers and tracker, get a good DNS setup and you can easily save few hunderd dollars per month when running volume.
If you have any questions about the setup just reply here or send me a PM, I can tell you about my personal setup that I use to run good volume myself.
Having a good infrastructure is absolutely important but there is no reason to pay more for it than needed.
Being financially successful is not only about making as much money as possible, it´s also about not wasting money.
Thanks for the reminder twinaxe - very valid points! I agree that
When I first started writing the 40-day pop tutorial, I did consider using a self-hosted tracker instead. However, self-hosted trackers involve having to manage a server and databases - something that a lot of non-technical newbies can do without, especially in the beginning when they're having to take in vast amounts of information in order to even launch their first campaign.
So, in the end, I decided to use
But for anyone who is willing to consider self-hosted solutions, yes, Binom could be a great option - I've heard good things about it, although haven't used it personally.
I would personally recommend FunnelFlux. It has several pricing options - you can host it yourself, or you can pay for managed-hosting (where the hosting part is completely taken care of for you), and cloud-based subscription will be available soon too.

Cost-wise, Funnelflux is certainly comparable to Binom. And at higher traffic volumes, it's a LOT cheaper than Voluum:

And the biggest benefit of Funnelflux is how versatile it is in terms of the kinds of funnels you can build. It's not linear like Voluum is (or most other trackers are). If you're creative with funnel design, sky's your limit - as Funnelflux certainly won't be limiting you.
Hope this information will help someone!
