Good tool for spying after my competition?

What is the most recommended tool for spying after your competitor and finding where he is advertising around the web? Is there anything for free (or a trial period)?
I used to like Alexa back in the days where it was possible to dig deep and find all the biggest websites that are relevant to a specific country.
Any good suggestions in that regard?

Depends on what you want to research.
Some stats you can see for free, for deeper research and top lists you need a Pro account.

If you are on a limited budget, you can try manual spying. Just use a VPN and install the user agent switcher plugin.

How to Spy on a Budget – Attila’s step by step guide!

1. Get the HMA Pro app installed on your phone, fill in your login credentials (user/pass)
2. Pick the GEO you want to spy on (ie Malaysia) and connect via the HMA Pro app to get a malaysian IP address.
3. Fire up Google Play, and look at the top free apps – download a bunch of apps & games preferably from each category
4. Open each app, and WAIT – it takes a few seconds for a banner to show. Click it, see what happens! Take a screenshot to document the creative.

TIP: The easiest way to take a screenshot on Android 4.0 and above is to simply press and hold your phone’s power and volume down button at the same time for 1-2 seconds.

It depends on what networks he is using.
If he is using Pop networks you can go with Adplexity Mobile, for Native networks go with Adplexity Native, for Desktop go with Adplexity Desktop.
You see, that also can cost alot of money.
I first mentioned Similarweb because you said that you used Alexa and compared to the other solutions posted here Similarweb is the most similar to Alexa.
You don't need to tell exactly what your competitor is doing but it could help if you could give a rough direction what you are looking to research.
Is it CPA stuff with Pops or Native then Adplexity would be your best bet.
For banners you could check What Runs Where.
For general research or gathering more in depth information about the traffic platforms or to get info about platforms that are not supported by the two services above you could use Similarweb.
Unluckily there is no "one fit for all" solution.
