Cutting Traffic By OS/Device/etc. (5)

Cutting Traffic By OS/Device/etc.

I've seen a lot of excellent tutorials on optimizing a campaign by cutting unprofitable LPs, offers, and ad placements.

Do you also cut by OS, device type, brand, etc?

In the attached screenshots, I could get profitable by focusing on Windows OS but I'm not sure there's enough volume.

Anyway, would you guys share your thoughts?

Your campaign ROI is still -82.66% if the cost in your stats screenshot are correct.

Instead of duplicating this campaign on another one where you target Windows only devices, I would focus more on placements first if you’re running Pops.

What is the traffic source you are running this campaign on? What’s the conversion flow of your offer? How many offers and landers are you currently split-testing and what’s the offer’s EPC and CR for network?

Give us a few more details on your current situation.

The numbers are from the very beginning of the campaign, without any optimizations to present. To date, I spent approximately $200 and I've cut about $82 in ad placements. I also made some mistakes along the way. I was so focused on cutting ad placements that I forgot to review my offers. I noticed one offer had zero conversions. If I would've cut that offer sooner, I could've been less unprofitable.

I'm pretty sure the numbers would look different, if I took a recent snapshot.

I'm using popunder traffic from PropellerAds, going to one offer, that converts on email submit. (I had three offers going originally but one seems to give the best results.)

Offer 1: CR: 0.47%, EPC: $0.01 (currently running)
Offer 2: CR: 0.00%, EPC: $0.00 (disabled)
Offer 3: CR: 0.35%, EPC: $0.01 (disabled)

I also had three LPs but I removed two because the last one gave the best CR:

LP 1: CTR: 5.29%, CR: .23%

Let me know if you need more information.

You can cut by basically ANY targeting option that your traffic source allows to block or target. The rules are pretty much the same as with the other factors, such as placements or LPs ...

You have to keep one thing in mind though .. if you cut a large targeting element such as OS, you have just instantly lost all the volume that matches that OS. That's why it's better to start with the targeting options that have lower impact ... if you cut a placement, you will only block traffic coming from that one placement.

It's a good idea to focus on these targeting option with campaigns that you just cannot optimize into green ... for example, it's quite common to see VERY different performance with mobile traffic for iOS vs Android.

Yes, you can cut by these options.

Just make sure that what you cut is really what you wanted to cut.

Many times traffic sources use a different device detection database than your tracker and accidentally you can cut something different.

So watch closely once you cut.

Or you may not able to cut that particular phone model, because they don't have it as selection etc.

Also as Matej noted above -> you may lose a good chunk of your traffic. Let's say most of the traffic is from Android, you cut it and you lose 80% of traffic.

But yeah, this is the "magic of optimisation", you have to dig in your data to find some profitable segments/combinations
