The Ultimate Smartlink Explanation - Why Should You Start Using It?

Smartlink has been around for quite sometime now. Yet we still receive multiple of the same questions regarding a SmartLink tech from our new & existing publishers every day. That is why we would like to dedicate this article for the internet marketing community to understand more about SmartLinks.

What is it exactly?

For those who don’t know about a SmartLink, simply put, it’s a collection of multiple offers running behind a Single URL, nothing really complicated about it. Since many offers are rotating, payouts are dynamic. Typical smartlinks have offers for all geos, all OS, all devices and all connection types (3G and Wifi).

Performance of the smartlinks won't always be at its best especially on your best good old segments but smartlink can be the most consistent revenue stream for you once you've learned the basics of running it. We have partners who have been running smartlinks with us since the beginning and still make huge money from them today - ranges from $XXX to XX, XXX daily!!

There are networks that make big amount of money just on smartlinks alone! Since you won't be needing a lot of optimization than running single campaigns, they can last for many months even years, so keep an open mind and do a lot of testing! if you haven't tested, don't let it intimidate you. I suggest you give them a shot. Like seriously!

Why people are using smartlinks?

You can never monetize all the traffic that you paid for. Not all your site visitors are gonna convert and some of the traffic are just really crappy! Also, you can not really MANAGE all of them, especially when you’re getting tons of traffic. Some visitors just want to leave and exit your page, and some visitors are from un-targeted, un-supported countries or other OS. This leftover visitors are also known as remnant traffic.

These exiting and untargeted visitors usually go to waste because you are unable to monetize them - meaning you don't have good and relevant offers for them.Other reasons traffic becomes remnant:

NOW THE PROBLEM:
It will be difficult for you to find and setup offers to cover every segment of your traffic (geo, OS, device, etc.), address every angle and so on. Further, it would be tough to separate your traffic for each offer, manually!

THE SOLUTION? Smartlinks! Smartlinks! Smartlinks!

There is no need to separate traffic to particular offers yourself, smartlink has it’s set of rules per geo, carrier, device and have multiple offers rotating inside. So you can simply target them all in just ONE LINK!

The SMART Optimization Process

You don’t have to worry about how smartlink does it analysis and optimization but i think having a very simple explanation will help you understand it better and how you can use it effectively.

Here is a quick and simple explanation on how the smartlink optimization is being done by the system. Let’s make it very simple by using a basic example of sending your first 800 clicks. Traffic is from Argentina from an Android device, Movistar carrier. All offers inside for this targeting have a payout of $1.00, to make things simple.

1st Smartlink Attempt – (The Introduction)
Offer – Weight %: Clicks, Leads, EPC

As you can see, 4 offers are being rotated equally, but with different results. There’s a clear winning offer (Offer C) based on the EPC which is the sole basis for optimization.

The first 800 clicks are the data collection stage (in reality, the more traffic it gets the better the optimization becomes), to allow the system to understand what offer converts best, and adjust the weight of the highest EPC offer accordingly.

2nd Smartlink Attempt (The Optimization)
Clicks: 800Offer – Weight %: Clicks, Leads, EPC

Now what the SmartLink does is to help maximize the conversion of your traffic. It optimizes Offer B & C to be pushed more to help get more clicks out of your traffic, and as you can see Offer B is not doing as well as Offer C. So for the next 800 clicks, SmartLink will maximize it something like this:

3rd Smartlink Attempt (Maximizing Conversions)
Clicks: 800
Offer – Weight %: Clicks, Leads, EPC

Smartlink will then starts to optimize the traffic more and more aggressively giving 75% of the traffic to the best converting offer in the particular segment in Argentina. That is just an extremely simple example of what SmartLink tech does. Let’s continue to cover some more details.

The Learning Process

As you see above, it was quite easy to understand. Smartlink directs your traffic to the best offers resulting in maximum conversions. But how does SmartLink knows your traffic?

WHAT IF TODAY I SEND IPHONE TRAFFIC AND TOMORROW ANDROID TRAFFIC? DOES THAT MEAN THE OPTIMIZATION RESETS OR IT DOES NOT CONVERT AT ALL?”

We get this kind of questions a lot too. The best answer to this is, SmartLink figures your traffic type before sending it to multiple offers. So a simple example will be this – an Android traffic will only be sent to Android only offers, and an iPhone traffic will only be sent to iPhone offers only.

Who Can Run Smartlinks? How to Run Them?

Anyone who has traffic can run smartlink!

  1. Individual Affiliates/Media buyers
    • Run on Direct traffic
      • Start broad and drilldown on evergreen targetings and focus on that.

    • Set as Default fallback offer
      • Use global intellink to be the default fallback for their campaigns when you get traffic from untargeted/unsupported geo/OS/device.

    • Back-button Traffic
      • Use global intellink to help them monetize their pages/campaigns better when they click back button.

    • Geo-specific Intellink
      • e.g. if they do well in certain offers in a specific geo or region, we can build a geo-specific smartlink just for them

  2. Performance Network [CPA/CPL/CPI]
    • Use global intellink to be the default fallback for all offers in their network

  3. Smartlink network
    • Global Intellinks [mainstream, adult, cpi]
    • Geo-specific Intellink

  4. Performance + Smartlink network
    • Set as Default fallback offer
    • Geo-specific Intellink

  5. Ad Network
    • Remnant Traffic [on revshare]
    • Geo-specific Intellink [on revshare]

  6. Direct Advertiser
    • Set as Default fallback offer
    • Back-button Traffic
    • Exit Traffic [timeout redirects, window-close]
    • Popunders
    • Final page of your offer flow
    • At the offer "thank you" page

  7. Content Pub
    • Back-button Traffic
    • Exit Traffic [timeout redirects, window-close]
    • Popunders
    • Remnant traffic

Smartlink is constantly learning and it gets better and smarter as data grows, which inevitably increases performance of the machine. In summary, it basically takes care of the following on your behalf:

1. Split testing of potential offers for each segment and verticals

2. Deeper analysis of user metrics (geo, OS, carrier)

3. Evaluate best offer that produce the best EPCs on your traffic

4. Optimize offers real-time (eliminate bad performing and keep the best offer in rotation)

There is nothing very complicated science behind this. I really think it’s about finding and targeting the right traffic (the evergreen segments + real traffic) and testing many sources is the key to running smartlink successfully. Though a good tracker can help you make better decisions too.

If you are going to run as a direct campaign, just remember to narrow down your targeting to some potential segments (but dont be too targeted) and cutting off some placements before you can get profitable.
