Will it be possible to rank high with a ".me" extension? (12)

Will it be possible to rank high with a ".me" extension?

Hi guys
I'm a total beginner with seo and I'm looking to buy a domain for a new project of mine. Are there any differences in terms of how easy it is to rank high with .com compared to .me (or any other weird extension for that matter)? I've never seen any .me in search results, which brings the question if it's because google makes it much harder to rank high with such an extension or it's because no one uses this extension?

Thanks!

Unless you want to rank in Montenegro I wouldn´t use a .me domain.

Go for a generic extension such as .com or .net or if you want to rank in a specific country use a domain for that country (.es for Spain, .be for Belgium etc..)

So always go for a .com, .net or local extension and steer clear from any fancy extensions such as .shop, .live etc..

Expireddomains.net is a great tool for finding good domains which have expired or are up for sale.

Thanks for the answer! By the way, does exact match keyword domain still contributes to ranking?

I still think it is a good idea to include the keyword in the domain so not exact but if you want to promote shoes you could try something like:

bestshoes.com
supershoes.com
myshoes.com
etc...

Good luck!

Google's official party line is that it does not ... but many practioners still claim it does, although almost all of them will admit that it matters much much much less than before..

I don't do SEO, so this is only what I hear and see.

But in any case, I don't recall seeing a .me domain come up in first page SERPs of any Google searches I have done recently ... and I am probably one of Google's power users.

From my personal experience, country specific domains help in local SEO efforts with sites that also use the local language. I never tried to put "english" content on a country specific tld so no idea if it has any impact.

If I buy an exact match domain (I know it has less of an effect these days), which version will be better SEO wise? my-best-domain.com or mybestdomain.com ?
Thanks!

I had better results with NON hyphenated ones personally. But as you say, the effect is gone from the most part, at least in google ... some people still claim that it works well with bing for example though.

Another question about domains
Lets say I want to open a review website about local attractions in Berlin for tourists who visit there. The website will be in English because it will be targeting tourists, not the locals, so in this case which domain extension should I pick? .com or .de?
Thanks!

.com would be better if these are for non german tourists

I was also thinking like that at first, but what about the tourists that are already in Germany during their vacation and are looking for new attractions? They will probably be using local WiFi which will make them considered as "locals" from google search engine point of view...what do you think about that?

I presume your website text will be in English and your target audience will be submitting queries like "Things worth seeing in Cologne" instead of "Sehenswürdigkeiten in Köln".

In any case, there in nothing preventing you from buying the .com and the .de and trying out both. It will only cost you an extra $15 a year.

Try it out and see what happens, that is the only real way to find out.
