The most important element to profit on native - Filtering.

So after quite a long time of burning my mind through this. I figured that the biggest, most important and the single most vital element that could either make or break your profitability on NATIVE is audience filtering.

And when I say filtering, I don't mean in terms of targeting, rather in terms of your AD itself. The only way to ensure you don't over spend and waste your budget is to filter away the non-buyers within your AD itself. The best way to do that is to CALL OUT YOUR AUDIENCE within the ad itself.

For example - Currently, I use words like...

Women over 40 - This video leaves men obsessed over you.

Women over 50 - Never fall for a man before you know this?

What are some clever words you guys use to call out your audience in the ad itself?

"Mommies" always do well! Also using "shopaholics" a lot...

Yup, this has worked very well for me for ages. Some of the words I have used :

- dating : single men only, older men only, 40+, 50+ ... so similar to yours. Then some location related words, didn't even have to be accurate : in your area, around you ... if any kind of region targeting was possible, I would add a large city in the region. Stage of mind or relationship works well too : lonely, divorced, unfaithful, cheater ...

- apps : iPhone users, Android fans ... or other big brands. Addressing a general problem that everyone has : low battery, slow phone ...

- sweeps : using the brand on the voucher or gift and targeting people who are attached to in in some way : Do you shop in Tesco? Low to buy groceries at Aldi? For IKEA customers only ...

The list could go on, it's pretty much a clever way of binding your angle with the creative. It's a very effective method. This is also the reason for me to prefer banners and other form of display advertising over pops or other direct traffic delivery methods ... I like to have one more step to pre-optimize the traffic

Absolutely amazing responses above. Thanks a ton guys.

Man it is slightly frustrating when I reflect back on it now. But I spent $100k on doing Native back in the day where I broke even at first and finally got it up to 10-15% profit. Having other more productive ventures made me quit this. However, now I feel like I missed out on so much. I was constantly calling out my audience with their age and gender.

However, there is so darn much to this. Here is what I'll be testing next...

For women who want to get married some day - Watch this now.

Special Video for women who still miss their ex?
Video for women who want their ex back in 2018?

Video for women who want to date a rich man in 2018

Yup, this is the way to go, you need to find the right audience for what you are offering. It's pointless to attract click of users who are not interested in what you are selling. Theyneed to identify themselves with what you are offering, that's why things like local language specifics and slang can improve performance a lot too.

I think those are a start, but they're more like an ad you'd see on facebook or adwords than something tailored for native.

You need to make them more like an actual article headline you'd see on a news or content site. You'll get higher ad CTRs and not trigger peoples "this is an ad" reflex.

Here's a couple of examples off the top of my head:

I've made some good money with a twist on this strategy:

I am selling a product targeted to men but I am speaking to their wives/girlfriends/moms :P
