Hey STM'ers how yo doing?
!
I arrived home to Melbourne yesterday after spending 2 weeks in Thailand with my girlfriend, which is the most fked place in the world. And yeah, ping pong show is not exactly a romantic night out, but nonetheless we had to experience it. I mean, a real life Octopussy or a samurai sword appearing from thin air.....
Anyway, about 10 days before I left I had an idea of a campaign to run on Facebook, and it turns out that this campaign alone paid for my entire trip and all these extra fun things along the way, times triple, before my account was banned for logging in from a Thailand ip. Rookie mistake I know.
But one thing, this campaign breaches my usual approach of K.I.S.S which is why I am giving away the idea, I simply cbf'd going through the process again, but anyone out there wanting to take this angle for anything go ahead, but its a lot of work.
So what is it?
Gaming to every single university/college in the USA making it sound like they were competing against their bro's!
For example one of the best was Auburn University.
So what I did with targeting was all males and females aged 18-25 who attend Auburn University.
I then grabbed images to do with the high school like these ones

My ad copy was like
Auburn's Greatest Gamer?
Test your skills against your piers, who reigns supreme? Click to play for free!
Hate Sport, Love Gaming?
Leave the court and pitch behind, test your skills against other students. Click to play for free!
The demo's for the different schools will vary in size, and so will the ROI but auburn had a considerable audience and the roi was up into the 400% but throughout the whole campaigns it was anywhere from 50% for larger schools to 1000% for schools with a small demographic.
Also ctr is very easy to get HIGH, so if your not above 0.2 start again
Now what I did was go through absolutely every college and university in the US in which there are hundreds, which a quick google search will show you.
And as you can see there is a boatload of work to get this campaign up and running, but it was 100% worth it!
The offers I ran was runes of magic, wizards101, Overkings and Duck hunt, but runes of magic was by far the best, although I ran into quality issues and had to stop it.
Now, I know a lot will go ahead and copy this campaign so be aware.
It will become extremely frustrating when you spend time uploading so many ads to get them disapproved but what I found was submitting ads at around 5-8pm Melbourne time they got approved over night.
What else would work with this angle?
Umm maybe education..... dating........ coreg........ get on it!
So yeah hope you all enjoyed this one, it was a very good campaign while it lasted!
I would appreciate some thanks and I will keep these coming, I have way to many ideas to handle on my own and I really cbf'd going through the ad submitting process again.
Oh and one more thing, please try and keep the PM's to a minimum I just gave away a huge campaign for free, so the rest is up to you, so if you do not get a reply I may have missed your PM or I am in the ceebsing mood haha
Anyway thanks STM'ers good community here love it all and good luck at taming the beast of Facebook
Oh and one more thing, because the clicks were so cheap every school I tried was profitable, the problem is getting all the images and the ad's up for the different schools, but once its up the money will come in easy as it is to pick up lady boys..
Dammit I hate writing posts to click reply and my net fucks up losing it...
anyway the jist of it was good case study and the main thing people should take away from this is the concept.
what single guy wouldn't want to meet local girls who attend the same school?
much shorter version but guess it's the no fluff one
awesome! nuff said...
Awesome work! Thanks for the share
Awesome idea!
I remember guys using this strategy couple years ago to push edu offers and it worked just as good.
Welcome home Maynzie!!
awesome work....just a word of advice though with games....get approval of these images first....most gaming offers require in game images....and not using them will get you not paid...
BUT
some games are very cool about what you use...and will give you leeway to run stuff like this....just run it by your AM first.....
What lies down here to positive ROI is the concept! Nice one Maynzie!
Fucking awesome angle, gaming offers by targeting universities! Oh man, i'm really loving this one
I've targeted university's before with mobile offers (back in the day when it was easy), but gaming passed right by me!
Good stuff, my only question is did the ping pong show girl do the parakeet trick?
No worries for the share
I just feel sorry for the people who choose to set up this campaign because it drove me crazy haha but I am glad everyone enjoyed it
@polar
Yeah I was aware of that, I have done a lot to runes of magic in the past and I have a good relationship with my rep and he said it would be ok as long as the lead's backed out, but in this case it did not haha, but I have been paid so no worries there
@guvna
Haha man nah I didn't see that, but having the ping pong show card flashed in my face 100's of times on the street I became aware of the 27 different shows available for my entertainment hahahaha and they were absolutely fked!
But all in all it's a great place hahaha loved it there and IM made it so much better, I mean I probably worked 30 mins a day making sure my accounts were funded and what not, but it definitely allowed to do some awesome stuff over there! Full moon party was off its face, maybe a little too hektik for me haha considering I got carried home by a random kiwi I was asking if he knew lorenzo green, how embarrassing...
Anyway yeah haha good angle, I would definately do it again when I have a new account setup, because I have a list of the best universities for it so it probs would cut the time in uploading by 25%
Cheers guys!

Hahaha Maynzie, NZ is small but it's not THAT small!
Hahaha yeah try explain that to me after a few of those buckets, he was from Wellington and 27 years old haha so I couldn't keep my mouth shut haha
Hey Maynzie, welcome home! For those game offers were you dealing direct with the advertiser? or via a CPA network?
Hey hey Pax
I've never gone direct haha I never really tried it out, just a cpa network
hey maynzie i setup a campaign based on this idea targeting Penn State which had around 37k people but within 2 days of running it with a 0.65 cpm bid when the suggested bid was 0.38 to 0.58 I only got 400 impressions, is it meant to be this low?
Thanks Maynzie. I wonder if this would work with PPV too like LI? Scrape the selected uni websites and facebook pages. Or maybe the CPM (min $15 on LI) is too high.
@mattmatt sorry man I don't know how facebooks impressions and shit works haha, I always bid higher then the higher suggested bid and the bids lower from my ctr so even if I bid 0.72 cents, my clicks are usually 8-15 cents each
@agent007 you could try it man, I wouldn't know and people wont know till you test it
The reason it works so well on Facebook is because of the school images and mascots catches their eyes good as
@maynzie hmm ok, but were you usually seeing around more then 200 impressions a day per college?
Oh yeah thousands man, your ctr must be low so your ads arent being served
I bet the CTR is dropping anyway haha because people will be copying this
@maynzie thats the thing lol I havent even gotten 1 click since there is to little impressions
Make some new ads man, add borders, mess with the colours etc and try new headlines copying exact isn't going to work
There 2 ways to target these schools.
1. Is in the actual school targeting section, you can target for example "Ohio State"
2. You can target "#Ohio State University" under precise targeting
You'll get atleast 2x the #'s if you do both, but i honestly have no idea which will convert better, so you'll have to split that.
It's easy to only see 200 impressions for demo's under 100k like these, so you really have to bump your CTR and then the traffic will flood in.
The real work here is managing/creating XXX campaigns for all the schools!
Yeah 100% right Stacks! The money is in the volume that this campaign provides, targeting 1 school is gonna make u not much at all, depending on the school it could be break even to $50, but if you target all the schools, and there is so many!!! thats where the money comes in!
you are just direct linking to the offer? Without a page in between?
@presfox
I don't know what maynzie was doing, but a lander could definitely go a long way with a tight targeting campaign like this one. If you match the lander to the school/game it connects your whole campaign together, so when i run a campaign of this type with such a high level of targeting I'd always test direct linking and a lander.
Ahaahha, look at us NZers, out and about helping stranded and helpless Aussies.
I did a similar campaign a few months ago targeting universities - they are an awesome demo because there a so many pockets of 100k+ people to target specifically. My campaign didn't do well though, was outside my niche really and didn't have the budget to test it well. I was using an API platform so ;-P it was easy to set up for me.
Also, with targeting, make sure to look up the abbreviations for the universities as well - quite often you might have something like Arizona State University, and in school targeting you can use Arizona State University, Arizona State, and also ASU. Sometimes those 3-4 letter abbreviations accounted for 90% of the demo sizes! I just looked all US universities up on Wikipedia, then tried abbreviation, name, truncated name, reverse name (e.g. Arizona State Uni vs University of Arizona State).
Wow bro thats a very good idea and standpoint to cut into, targeting young people like that is genius!
Awesome Idea. You can easily target each university students for dating niche as well.
Good post and love STM.
Nice!

great info thanks guys
