Just one thing - Your psychology. The guys who do big numbers are mentally tough. They don't give up when a test doesn't perform as per their expectation. They know that it is a game of digging many holes and eventually you'll hit gold. Sometimes it could mean trying 10 campaigns and sometimes it could be trying a 100. Whatever the number might be, they're willing to do whatever it takes.
Newbies try a few things, fail slightly, give it up completely. Try something else, fail slightly and give it up all over again. The key is to pick one thing and go as deep as humanly possible with it to actually understand how it functions. Big guys aren't humans with supernatural powers.
They just understand that it is all a process and you have to let the numbers decide what works Vs. what doesn't. This is why they're so successful usually.
Educate yourself, listen to advice from people that you KNOW have made it, apply the advice given.
Be persistent and consistent with what you are doing in AM. Don't give up after the first few failures, you will have to test a lot of stuff.
At the same time, do not try to break the wall with your head, if run into a dead end, admit it and change focus.

Be consistent, as many have mentioned - make a plan and go towards your goal step by step, be disciplined, learn as much as possible, and then don't switch. It happens often that affiliates start in one vertical, then something goes wrong and they already look for other verticals/traffic sources, etc, so they don't really learn anything in deep and they are jumping from one trend to another, looking for fast money schemes. There are always new topics appearing in the industry, newcomers tend to massively switch between trends, try not follow the crowd.
Choose one niche and do the most for it.
